Hi,

I applied to only three schools, all in Louisiana. I interviewed at all of them (Tulane, LSU in NO, and LSU in Shreveport) and now I am on the "acceptable" list for all of them. Anyone else on these waitlists? Has anyone gotten accepted after being waitlisted? I need some encouragement.

Thanks!

i got the "no action" from lsu-no, i've heard from lots of tulane med students that they do have a good bit of waitlist activity and that last year people were accepted right until before schools started. maybe you should think about sending a letter of intent to the one you liked best.

LSU-S is interviewing thru 3/29. I'd imagine there would be more wait list movement after that time, when all applicants have been interviewed.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info about LSU-Shreveport and Tulane. Does anyone know anything about LSU-NO? How many people have they accepted? Did they fill their class for March 15th?

At the interview, we were told that they HAVE to offer all the seats in the class by March 30th as an AAMC regulation. They will make decisions on any remaining seats on the deadline (and there were seats unclaimed at this point).

Elmer, when did you interview @ LSU-NO? Did Eubanks mention the date of the next AdCom meeting? I know that they meet the 3rd Friday of the month, but next Friday is Good Friday, so does that mean they met yesterday???

I'm stopping by Admissions on Monday and will inquire re: Adcom meeting...I don't see why they wouldn't tell me.

Although I didn't apply to Tulane, it seems logical they'd take a comparatively high number of people off their waitlist since so many are out of state applicants.

I know last year there was VERY little movement off the LSU schools' waitlists. LSU-S had fewer than 10 spots open up mid-May and I was told NO was similar. For what it's worth, I was told in "typical" years around 20 people are accepted from the waitlists.

As many/most/all of you are aware the highest odds of getting off a waitlist SHOULD occur in mid-May when applicants holding multiple acceptances are "required" to forfeit all but one place.

On a related note, just yesterday I sent a letter to LSU-S withdrawing from my place in their class...I sincerely hope one of you gets it! :luck:

Good luck all and keep the faith! 👍

Thank you so much -- I really appreciate it! My interview was March 1st, and I was bummed to find out that they had just met the Friday before. I've been good about "not thinking about it" to let the time pass, but now i'm starting to get nervous!!! 🙂

Also, I have a question for everyone in general...some advice would be great. Initially, I was going to write thank you notes to my interviewers right after my visit, but then decided to wait until closer to the Adcom meeting. My reasoning is that I wanted my name to be on their mind right before the meeting. But now I feel stupid b/c i should have written them right after my interview so that they'd remember who i was! did i make a big mistake? or am i freaking out about this way too much? (it's okay if you are honest and tell me that i have too much time on my hands! )

I wouldn't be worried about the whole letter writing timing. I would, however, just go ahead and send them out.

Some people never send a thank you note and get in so who knows? I liked my interviewers and felt they went out of their way to make me feel comfortable (or at least 2 of the 3 did- I just faked w/ the 3rd 😀 ).

Consequently, I just typed brief letters mentioning something specific to each interview I found helpful...nothing too glowing just "thanks for your time and courtesy" kind of stuff.

Two of my three interviewers emailed/snailed me a "congrats" when I got in but maybe they do that for everyone...I don't know. It can't hurt in my estimation and neither can any update/intent letter if something new is going on w/ you.

Good luck!

Does anyone know when the last meeting or the next meeting of the LSU-NO admissions com. was/will be?

I'm going crazy waiting!!!!

What's wrong with LSU in New Orleans?

As far as the school goes, im sure its great. I just have some doubts about their admissions process. (ie- me not being able to achieve so much as an interview after 2 rounds of applying, wheras shreve interviewed and accepted me on my first application almost right away)

You ever get any acceptances to the LA schools?

I finally have an interview...so we'll see.

Trust me...if I hadn't received an interview...I'd be right there with you. We'd be bitter and bitterer!

Now I had to wait an extremely long time to receive the invite, but it's a mute point now.

Everything happens for a reason. Perhaps, Shreveport is where you're meant to be.

I cannot remember him telling us when the next meeting was specifically. He only stated that they would offer all seats by March 30th and May 15th would be the biggest day for waitlist movement.

well, the rumor is that the adcom met last friday...so, perhaps someone will be getting a letter in the mail at the end of this week or next...

2 tall -- good luck with that interview! good news -- it's very relaxed and not intimidating at all!!! 🙂

I hope that rumor is true... I called the admissions office to ask when the meeting was/is held for March, but they couldn't "give that information out".

I'd expect anyone who's applied twice should know there's not necessarily any rhyme or reason to the process. 😀

A good friend of mine is a 1st yr EM resident at Charity...her application history:

-Her 1st app she was interviewed and subsequently waitlisted at BOTH LSU schools.
-Her 2nd app she was interviewed only at LSU-NO and waitlisted.
-Her 3rd app she was interviewed only at LSU-NO and accepted.

I'm sure many have similar stories...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Both LSU schools offer excellent opportunities in vastly different environments...and many people end up choosing one or the other based solely on location/proximity.

I like LSU-S better, personally. Additionally, it pains me to think that I could purchase a mansion in Shreveport for what a crap-hole will cost me in NO... 🙄
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Good luck on those interviews and stay strong on that waitlist!

2Tall,
Didn't you just have an interview? How did it go? Did they anything about when the next meeting was or how full the class is?
Thanks!

i've heard NOTHING..... i seriously had a breakdown on monday. getting sick of having my stomach turn when i go to the mailbox and having it be EMPTY!!!

2tall -- what's the scoop from your interview? any info for us kids anxiously awaiting our letters (which will probably be "no action" letters!!)

elmer & marina -- should be any day now...huh? let me know if you hear anything!!!

Jennifermov, not to be negative of anything, the admissions process at LSU-NO is wack. Don't be surprised if you don't hear a peep out of them for a while. Here's my story of my one and only dealing with LSU-NO.

Received request to interview in early January 2004.

Interviewed early January 2004. First interviewer was over 15 minutes late. Sat alone in waiting room thinking up every possible horrible scenario that would leave me with a less than favorable interview. Interview sucked.

Interviewed at WVU SOM in late January 2004, really, really wanted to go to LSU-NO so I just acted laid back and nonchalant about everything and had a great time (a.k.a. being myself).

Got first letter from LSU-NO in February. "Congrats, you're on the 'Acceptable List'"

Got 3 more letters from LSU-NO after each round of adcom meetings stating, "We didn't make a decision on you, you're still on the 'Acceptable List'"

Got a phone call from WVU SOM saying I was accepted. Less than 25% out of state acceptance rate. Mixed feelings. I still want to stay in LA and New Orleans.

Next, received rejection letter from LSU-NO. Called next day to set up "exit interview."

Exit interview dialogue (from what I remember):
Adcom chair: So, let's look at your file. Those MCAT scores... oh wait, those are actually pretty competitive. Community service experience... no that's not it either, you had quite a few hours volunteering at East Jefferson General. Clinical experience... geez, a pharm tech for 2 years. Ah Ha, what was your GPA from you senior year at UNO?
Me: Umm, a 4.0 sir, while working in a genetics lab at UNO.
Him: ...... Oh, hmm, I see. Well every year we have about 50 outstanding students who are just head and shoulders above the rest who we just about have to take. Then there is about 200 middle of the pack students where we just have to pick and choose which to accept. You, unfortunately, weren't one of the ones selected.
Me: So after those 50 top students, selection is completely arbitrary? (I really did say this)
Him: Yes, yes it is.
Me: Well thanks for your time, I have packing to do since I'll be moving to West Virginia to attend school there.
Him: Ah so you've been accepted elsewhere.
Me: Yes, I have.
Him: Well I have a friend up there who does....... (I kind of glazed over at this point) Be sure to look her up.
Me: Yeah, sure.

Moved to WV without waiting to hear back from LSU-Shreveport (they take FOREVER, I must've been the last person on the waitlist). Receive a forwarded letter from them while attending med school orientation in WV postmarked early August, telling me that I wasn't accepted.

I also have another friend who has all the tools to be a good doctor and great GPA, community service, etc, just struggled with the MCAT (not horrible or anything, I know people who got into LSU-NO with worse). She has applied for 2 straight years, not so much as even an interview. A damn shame.

Anyways, I hope things work out for you, sorry this post wasn't very positive but I just wanted to share a real life experience with the LSU-NO admissions process. I had to uproot my life in LA (I lived there my entire life, in the greater New Orleans area) and come up to a town and state I knew 0 about. Things are going great now, but my heart is still in New Orleans. Here's to hoping your process ends up better than mine did. Good luck, and my best advice, when you do get in, enjoy the summer before classes start, don't do anything except sleep late, eat lots of ice cream, and watch TV until it hurts to close your eyes... PLEASE. 🙂

Ciao,
Fif

I have heard many stories like this. My cousin was not accepted until his fourth attempt and wound up in the top 5% of the class. The whole interview is so laid back it is hard to believe that it has much influence on acceptance. However, there are so many with good numbers that are asked to reapply. Arbitrary is a good word for it.
Either way, they should have acceptance offers for every seat in the class sent out today from what I was told. I hope that chance falls favorably on fellow sdners 👍

The same shpiel i got. In other words, "I'm sorry, we've already reached our quota of slightly above average white males. Please try again next year." And same for me like your friend, no interview invites in 2 years. I had a better experience with shreveport than you mentioned though. They communicated with me right away and kept me up to date on everything going on, sent me an acceptance 2 weeks post-interview. 👍

Congrats on getting into Shreveport. I really didn't have a beef with Shreveport, I was just kinda rubbed the wrong way when they strung me out for so long. Dr Kennedy basically told me via email in late July that they were having a record low number of students accepted by Shreveport going to other schools, so my chances of a spot opening up were quickly diminishing. When I told him that I would be going to WVU rather than wait it out until the end, he told me that was probably the best thing to do, but was disappointed that I couldn't maintain my LA residency to go to school in Shreveport. (Maybe he was just being nice, but I'm pretty sure I was fairly high on the waitlist)

And to be perfectly honest, I was much more impressed with the Shreveport school than New Orleans. The school seemed to be more organized just overall my experience was much more enjoyable. However, I have been hearing buzzes about the new systems based approach not working out too good there. They switched about 4 or 5 years ago I think and apparently things aren't going as well as they hoped. Keep an eye on that and be sure to voice any problems that you or your classmates may have. Our class' academic council here is very active and we get what we want (most of the time). Good luck and Shreveport and enjoy the warm weather... I HATE the snow. 👎

Hey fif --thanks for sharing your experience. i'm sorry that you had to leave the state -- i went out of state for grad school, so i understand your feelings of being homesick...

cubsrule4e -- it's funny to me that your experience w/ shreveport has been better than your experience with NO. for me, it is the total opposite. My application at shreveport was complete a month before I was complete at New Orleans, and I STILL haven't heard a word from them. (however, last month I did get one of those emails that said I was still being considered for an interview.) I'm aggrevated that they can't make a stupid decision and just deny me -- i'm sure they will have plenty of students for their wait list out of those that have already interviewed.....

ultimately, i'm accepting the reasoning that the process is arbitrary. just because i have a good experience with one school doesn't mean that it has a good admissions process b/c there are tons of kids out there that are completely aggrevated by the same school.

I think that my application is competitive enought to be in that "200 middle of the pack" group at NO. I just pray that something about me stood out to my interviewers so that they actually remember me when my name came up in the AdCom meeting. on that note - i'm taking my lunch break to go home and check my mail..... 😱

My boyfriend is a first year at Shreveport. He went and spoke with Dr. Kennedy today, and Kennedy told him that those on the acceptable list should be patient until June 1st. Just a heads up for everyone waiting to hear from them. They are finished with interviews unless they do individual interviews for certain people.

Hey Mr. Postman, send me a letter, the sooner the better...

I go to Tech. Do LSU and Tulane accept a lot of Tech students? Everyone tells me I should finish at LSUS. Is this true? Does anyone know the average GPA/MCAT for successful applicants at the Louisiana med schools. Any responce is appreciated.

Thanks,
Caraway

Both schools post the avg scores on their websites.

elm and jen...there was no indication that the class is full. I don't know whether they were trying to be vague or what. I forgot to ask (sorry). They did explain how the waitlist works, but that's about it. Class size...165 are regular md...5 out-of-state md/phd...15 rural med. Total 180. It was mentioned that they normally send out around 30% more acceptances than seats.

letters went out today?!?!?!?! :scared: ya'll let me know if/when you hear something!!!! good luck!!!! :luck:

clc,

who is the "everyone" telling you to finish at LSU-S and why? I personally don't believe there is too much difference between the various state schools. I know we had people interview this year from both schools; however, in my class I don't believe there is anyone from LSU-S but there are about 5-6 from Tech.

Btw, I know the person who was the LAST one accepted off the waitlist last year. She was meeting with McCluggage on how to improve her chances for next year, when he got a phone call and excused himself. When he came back, he said, "you're not going to believe this but that was someone calling to give up their spot in the class and YOU are next on the waitlist. you're in!" this was about 2 weeks before class started.

So has anyone gotten anything interesting in the mail so far this week? It was my understanding that the LSU-NO committee met this past Friday and that letters were to be sent early this week, but I haven't gotten anything yet.

P.S. This process is miserable

i second that! i have a nervous breakdown nearly every day from the stress! i haven't checked the mail yet today, but nothing yesterday. or the day before. or the day before.... 😡

I've been waiting since October. We've all got to stop feeling nervous/upset about this. It doesn't help. I've started exercising and volunteering for an adult literacy company and national public radio.
Distract yourself!!!!

I did'nt think to much of what my girlfriends friend said about going to Tech. . My advisor told me not to worry about it and that Tech was an a pretty good school. Thanks for the feed-back though.

No action... Does LSU reject anyone outright or waitlist until the end?
