I've been accepted to University of Louisville School of Dentistry and University of Tennessee's Dental School. I'm a Tennessee resident, but there is a potential that after the aid I expect to receive, both schools would cost the same to attend. Which school should I go to and why? Also, have you heard anything bad about either school? Please be unbiased if you attended either. Thanks!!

What is the in state tuition/expenses for TN? You said there was a "potential" chance that you will receive enough aid that both school schools will cost the same. How sure are you?

It's usually a good idea to go your state school because it's cheaper.

Define "aid that you're expected to receive."

I'd vote for Tennessee.

UL has the nicer facilities but more specialties. UT has less specialties but the facilities are not that bad (newly remodeled clinic). Everything at UL is in one building, UT you have to walk around for classes in the main building versus dental clinic. UL has more outreach events to other parts of the state. UL has better research going on (if that matters).
UL has cheap access to UL sports. UT has access to the Memphis Grizzlies (NBA team). IMO, Louisville is generally a nicer city, less crime, etc but Memphis has interesting culture, great food, and an interesting factor to it. I would recommend Louisville if you have kids but either city is fun/interesting for young single dental students looking to see the world.
I've spent a year in Memphis but only about 2.5 weeks total (adding up a couple weekends from weddings, tourist visits, and other events) in the 'ville.

When did you get your TN acceptance?

BUMP - I interviewed at UT last year, didn't get in then, different story now (they don't re-interview re-apps, so I didn't interview there this year). I'm also in at UofL, which is where I was planning on going but now I'm not sure if I've given UT a fair shake. I loved both of the schools, and UofL was my favorite school from the group of schools that I interviewed at this year. But UT was my favorite school from last cycle, and I don't want UT to lose out simply because all of the details are a year old.

I know these aren't the two most popular schools in SDN land, but I'd still appreciate any and all input that anybody might possess regarding facts and intangibles. I'd be OOS at both schools.

What is the price difference between the two?

I have never known someone who goes to Louisville or interviewed there that didn't like it. Strong clinically, cheaper program, and solid reputation. Go to Louisville.

I need some clarification.... I understand you were accepted at Louisville. But were you accepted at TN? You said they don't interview second time applicants so I'm confused as to how this works out.

I've never seen UT, but I interviewed at Louisville. It's a good school with a laid back atmosphere. But don't base your decision solely on SDN opinions 🙂

In state school. A bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush. Memphis is a tough city, I got my car broken into a couple times and my house burned down by some bums during dental school but I'm still alive.
