hey everyone,

i need some help!!! i REALLY liked both of these schools, and i need some advice about which one to go with. if anyone who knows anything about either or both of these schools has any thoughts i would truly appreciate it, thanks. 🙂

btw, these are both out-of-state for me

Hello.

I'm a high school senior who lives in Lexington and knows nothing about both dental schools.

However, I recommend Louisville.

I am a first year out of state dental student at UK. I can honestly say I am so happy to be here over my state school. UK is a VERY student friendly program. ALL my professors treat us like colleagues. Our professors are funny and down to earth. There has not been one professor I've had any problems with. They make dental school SOOO doable. I have not found this semester stressful at all. It's very busy, but so easy in comparison to other programs. The students do really well on the board exams. If you have any difficulty, the faculty and staff do everything possible to make sure you pass and gradute. I wasn't crazy about Lexington initially, but I'm beginning to appreciate the friendly people that live here and all the nice, unique restaurants and shopping. The pharmacy, dental and med students at UK all get along very well. Competition between and within programs almost doesn't exist. I really recommend UKCD. Good luck!

Never mind my signature, I'm not at IU.

which year is supposed to be the hardest at UK? have you heard that your second year is significantly harder than the first or are they about the same?

thanks 🙂.

I graduated from UKCD. 2nd semester 2nd year, and 1st semester 3rd year are the semesters when you are slammed. You start clinic, have to keep up with lab work, and continue the didactic coursework like micro, physiology, Path, etc.. One of the best Path programs in the country. I've spoken with Louisville graduates, I think specialization would be better at Louisville, but do your DMD at UK.

At UK second year used to be significantly harder than it is now because they moved some of the second year classes into first year to make second year relatively easier. I am pretty sure second year is the toughest anywhere you go because there is more lab work and boards are at the end of the year. I've heard after first semester of third year becomes "the promise land."

UK is a great school. The professors are there to help you out as much as is needed. The atmosphere is extremely friendly. If you want to get into the area of oral facial pain and TMJ in depth, Dr. Okeson is head of that department and tops in the world on the subject. You will more than likely be required to purchase his textbook no matter what dental school you go to. The only down side is that there are no simulated labs. However you will be working with patients a little in your first year and alot more in the following years. So instead of the simulation you get more actual clinical work earlier.

I graduated from UK dental school and I am specializing at UofL. I have seen both dental schools and you cant go wrong with either one. I am partial to UK. There is not as much cut throat going on at UK. But that is more dependant on the individual class you get into. The faculty at UK is what make it so great. Either way you will be happy. good luck. If you have any specific questions let me know.

The progression in "hardness" of years at UK is as follows: Second year> Third year>>>>First year>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Fourth year.

Fourth is is pretty easy. First year is hard, but not that big of a deal. Second year is a biznitch and third year is almost as bad. They do what they call a "diagonal curriculum" where they get you into clinic as soon as possible, ie hygiene and sealants in first year.

U of L is a good dental school also, but it is a bit larger. I personally love UK. I give them money every year and will continue to do so. I am now at San Antonio and get to see firsthand what "student unfriendly" means, and San Antonio is considered a better dental school in regard to student relations. All of the Texas schools are much less student friendly with KY, and you cannot go wrong with UK. I highly recommend it.

I graduated with "NUKE". Be careful of any advice from this guy..ha.ha..
