Hello SDNers,

First time posting since being in dental school. Yay!

Anyways, it's time to buy my loupes and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. Most students at my school have designs for vision, surgitel, orascoptic, or q-optics. A lot of fourth years are complaining about designs for vision loupes breaking and headlight problems. As well as those with q-optics. I'm thinking most about surgitel and orascoptic.

Our school recommends the 2.5x but it really seems like nothing when I put them on. I've been liking the 3.0x and 3.5x much more. Does anyone have any experience with the orascoptic mini eyezoon (2.5/2.5)? What about with surgitel?

I hated 2.5x. Barely did anything. I went with 3.5x DFV. If I could have had a say in the matter would have went with Q-optics. There’s been a few other recent posts about this where people have talked about the pros and cons of a lot of different companies.

I went with oralscoptic omni with 2.5 loupes and 4.5 magnification on the side. You have a choice of getting 3.5, 4.5, 5.5. I wouldn't bother with the mini eye zoom.

Buy a lumadent light

hey Faux,

you are not a DS1 students iirc, so this must be your second pair of loupe. iirc, your fist pair was not even cheap so why you decide to ditch more money for this?

and you mention in another thread that 1800$ for this loupe with both 2.5x and 4.5x mag?
and we all know 2.5x is useless and wont be used so basically they give it for show. last time I called, they told me they charge 1000$ for an extra mag (crazy!).

I love orascoptic and just thinking of a brand for a second pair before i graduate and orascoptic's new omni is just so special.

At my school we're required to use 2.5x for preclinical work. Once I got into clinic, I wanted more magnification. I took out an extra school loan.

I was never satisfied with 2.5x. Even doing perio probing I had issues sometimes reading the depths.

20 year veteran here.

Get a cheap pair of 3.5* and a headlight from ebay.

The headlight in itself will allow you to see with much more clarity, and it really must be seen to be believed

When you outgrow these, then just get a 4.5 or so.

Even better, buy a microscope (ok, file this thought away for after you graduate, but I digress.... ... ....)

FWIW, I have two microscopes, and just keep buying the cheap loupes above, for my third room, and for when I just dont want to scope it.

I treat them with no love, care, or respect, and normally get a year or two out of them.

I go from room to room, and they get taken off and put on my head multiple times a day. If they get dropped, as happens, this is no dramas.

If you look at the interest that you pay (her in oz, a credit card interest rate is about 15 or 18%.

So, just the INTEREST on your $1800 loupes is about 300ish a year.

In other words, for the cost of buying your FIRST pair of $1800 loupes, I can have a lifetime supply of ones that are good enough.

The best thing I ever did in my dental career was to buy my first set of loupes
The second best thing I ever did was to get a headlight

Without both of these, I cant stand the profession.

As an aside, I have a couple of pairs, all the time, sooner or later, the cord breaks, and a new headlight is put in.
Twice in the last decade, I have "run out" of headlights, and had to use the overhead light. Worst week of my life, without a doubt!!
