Hey all,

I'm a student at another school but my boyfriend is at UCSF. He really wants to get Orascoptic or possibly DFV loupes but UCSF is contracted to Surgitel so they are somewhat required to get them. The loupes are $650 (which comes directly from their financial aid, it's already been set aside) and then to upgrade to Oakleys it's another $200 and to get a light it's another $450. I can get him any frame with 2.5 mag + light from Orascoptic for the same price so he'd much rather use that brand. I've heard of students who were able to petition to get their $650 returned to them so that they can buy a different pair of loupes. Does anyone know how to do this and can you please help us? We would really appreciate it, thank you!

I think its a little unethical for a school to have a contract with a loupes company. Maybe it is just a verbal contract but thats just not right. I would talk to the dean or financial aid director for the dental school specifically and express you concerns. We just had a bunch of reps come to our school and I think Orascoptic were the nicest looking and lightest frames. Hope they let him! Also $650 seems like a steal..for any brand with the light/loupes we are looking at $1300-1400,so if Surgitel is giving them for $650 I would just tell him to go for that

Our school has a contract with DFV and I tried my best to get out of it as I already had a pair of loupes with no luck. That said, if anyone wants to buy a pair of 2.5 DFV's I'm all ears 😀

Arn't TTLs usually tailored to a single person? Just wondering.

The only three or four variables are interpupillary distance, angle of declination, working distance and maybe Rx. Generally, people want the steepest angle of declination. So if you share the same interpupillary distance and working distance with someone else, you could use their TTL.

Buy flip-ups (w/o Rx) so you can resell them later. There's a decent market for used loupes. Someone was selling a nice pair of Heine flip-ups and I would've bought em' but the working distance was too long.

Don't the big three companies have great return policies. Why can't you just buy them and return?
