Fourth year dental student looking to buy a new set of loupes under the student pricing...

Which would you recommend surgitel or orascoptic? and what magnification? I have 2.5 at the moment so i am thinking at least 3.5?

Any help would be much appreciated, i can't financially afford to make a bad decision on this one!

My first pair of loupes were surgitel, I wasn't that happy with them but they did their job i guess. I now use Designs for Vision 3.5x expanded field with the small LED light. The frame is guaranteed for life. I'm very happy with them. Hope this helps, albeit its only my personal opinion.

If you can't afford to make a bad decision, I would consider DFV 3.5x EF buddy holly frames. These things are tanks and will last forever. You will buy 2-3 pairs of orascoptics during the lifetime of your DFVs.

But if you're hell bent on Orascoptic vs. Surgitel.. choose Orascoptic.

When I purchased my first pair of loupes I purchased both Orascoptics 2.5 and Design For Vision 2.5 w/ Nike Frames.
I tried both of them for a week, side by side.
DFV lenses are small, don't take up a lot of room, which is nice. The Nike frame is piece of junk plastic that looks like it could break anytime. Those Buddy Holly frames feel stronger, but ugly as heck.
Orascoptics frames are Italian, more stylish. The lenses are bit larger.

I ultimately decided on the Orascoptics. The Nike Frame on DFV was really disappointing.
I'm looking at another pair of loupes now, I'll check out Surgitel. They seems to have competitive prices against Orascoptics or DFV.

I still wear my DFV buddy holly frames, 12 years after I got them. The only thing that has worn out is the tether strap. They survived dental school, residency, and fellowship.

Probably gonna get their LED headlight, too, for the office.

Find a set of loupes that first and foremost fit your face. Then, find the ones that allow you to get the steepest declination angle on the lenses.

For me, I went with Surgitel 3.5x magnification. I can do just about everything in an ideal posture, straight back, VERY minimal forward posturing of the head and neck. I had previously used orascoptic and Designs for Vision, but once I went with Surgitels, all my neck problems disappeared. Well, 95% of them.

At the time I purchased my loupes, the other manufacturers were unable to get as good a declination angle as the Surgitels. I was lucky that the surgitels had frames that fit my face AND had a great angulation on them.

They're more expensive, but I feel the price is worth it. Remember you're probably going to be practicing for 20+ years...save your neck!

I started off with 2.5 x for about 2 years before I upgraded to 3.5 x and recently 6X magnification. Cost close to $2000 but worth it. As a result of reading articles by Dr David Clark (who practices "microdentistry"), I felt convinced to upgrade to higher magnification. According to some practitioners, the minimum should be 8X or 10x . One day, I hope to acquire a microscope to take my skills up to the next level. I have always had Heine loupes and been satisfied with all pairs I have worked with. You can't go wrong with optic equipment made by a German company.
