I am just curious about the whole purchasing loupes thing. I assume we'll need them for operative in year 1 as it will be essential to build both confidence and comfort using them. Do you get introduced to them by the school (for example, companies come in and demo various models to students), or do you have to search them out on your own? Clearly, I am way ahead of myself, but I am wondering if I should just start getting familiar with different styles and companies before school.

By the way (as if any of you really care), I have told the dark forces of medicine to F*%# themselves and will be at Tufts in September or August or whenever it is we start.

The major companies like Surgitel, Orascopic, etc. will probably visit your school. You can then check their various loupes and see which one you think will fit you best.

BTW don't be so quick to dismiss those med guys... We got to work with them in managing a significant number of patients... And they got nobody else to go to when a toothache hits. 😉

Does anyone have any opinion about which brand is the best? I know several dentists recommend SurgiTel because their telescopes are completely sealed so no condensation can form inside them.

I use SurgiTel, but don't thnk the brand matters a whole lot. Personal pref. is going to be key. Thus far I can't stand my loupes and constantly have them flipped in the up position. When they measured the focal point for mine, they must have jacked something up because the focal point they set doesn't come close to matching what I need it to be for working on a patient.

i guess your loupes suck, thanks for letting us know. i know for sure i won't be getting yours.

I really like my surgitels. The people who like the fixed in lens really like the orascoptic. It seems like they are all pretty much the same.

galvin, i know how to read, perhaps you need to know how to take a joke because it seems like you have something up your hole.

Galvin, eh? I especially like that you managed that in a post defending your ability to read.

Sorry, but I didn't catch any joke in there. Your statement seemed pretty blatantly out there.

My concern was that the brand of loupes I have don't suck, but rather that the focal point they set for me doesn't work for me.

Sorry if I misread your "joke" (work on your punch-lines). My apologies if I offended you.

Is the focal distance on loupes adjustable, or are you pretty much stuck with the "factory settings" when you get them?

If you're currently stuck with the default, maybe there's a killing to be made out there for the person who comes up with a way to make them adjustable... (my wheels are turning...) 😀

The sales rep will take a series of measurements when you order your loupes, so they'll be semi-customized to you. Don't hold me to this, but I think a few companies make adjustable loupes. You might look further into it.

Right, mine were customized (sort of) for me, but I was near the end of the line on that day, and I'm getting the feeling that the guy was just too tired to take the correct measurements.

For example, he measured from my nose to the end of my fingertips, but now that I think back, I think my arms were straight, NOT at a 90 degree angle as they should be (mostly) when working. Therefore, I have to basically stand up to see things clearly. If I'm sitting and the patient is supine or at a 45 degree angle, I'm way too close. 🙁

My surgitels are fully adjustible, so different people can actually use them. They are the flip up kind, and has a little screw that can be used to adjust them in our out for how wide apart your eyes are.

Oh, that's it, then. The TTL's are fixed.

My SurgiTels also have this, but that doesn't change the focal length, which is fixed into the lenses.

gavin,
just get some new loupes and stop complaining like a girl.

Dude, ever think that might be offensive to some/many/all of our female readers (leaving aside the fact that it was really rude to Gavin)? In this (or any) day and age, I think it's a really inappropriate thing to say.

Why can't we all just act civilly on these dang boards? Too much testosterone?

Just a thought. 🙄

I'm not complaining. I've never mentioned my loupes until this thread. I think they are a splendid product, but simply that mine weren't ordered correctly intially.

Honestly, I think all loupes are more or less the same. My initial post, in fact, merely stated that the OPs personal preference is probably going to be the deciding factor in his purchasing loupes.

Dental44, I'm at Tufts, and Surgitel supplied the entire class with loupes. It should be paid for already in your tuition/fees/bill when you come to orientation. I forget when we had Surgitel reps come in to fit us for loupes, but it was early in the semester.

As far as these loupes go, I like them a lot. Makes learning preps a lot easier. Don't stress so much about what to do before school starts. Everything that you think you'll need will be addressed during your orientation, by upperclassmen as you navigate the gauntlet of classes, and by your professors as the year moves along. In essence, you only need to know what your class knows. That's how it's worked so far, so take the time you have and use it wisely.

REST and RELAXATION.

He's been trolling Gavin pretty hard this last week or so. Just like all the others, either he'll get bored with it and quit or he'll go over the edge and get banned. Either way, he'll be a distant memory before too long. 😉
