I'm thinking of getting some loupes.
At the moment, the Designs for Vision range seems to be the ones I like the most.
Anyone have any experience with loupes they love or hate?
How about the 2.5 x vs 3.5 x decision?

There is a previous post that discusses this topic in details with lots of good feedback. I am sorry--i don't remember exactly when...may be Dr. Doan knows...

My class just ordered loups today; we went with DFV, basic model, x2.5 mag, total cost $850/pair. x3.5 seemed too much mag and too small of a field of view for most procedures.

The rep also had "cooler" designs: thinner frames, light weight, etc.; obviously more expensive. We all passed on these. 🙂

3.5x telescopes are generally constructed differently to 2.5x in most lines, including Designs for Vision and Zeiss. 3x and up are usually roof prism designs, have better edge-to-edge definition and greater image brightness, in addition to better magnification. Low-power 2.5x loupes, including those from Keeler, DFV and others are Galilean designs and are simpler and optically inferior. That is why they are cheaper. I recommend that if you can possibly afford the better loupes, you should buy them. Loupes last a long time, so you might as well buy ones you like, if you can.

I have the 2.5 dfv loupes and they are alright. If you order, and you are in practice, you can still tell them you just started and negotiate the resident rate, that's the only reason I went with them. My plastics mentor recommended getting the 3.5 mag loupes from surgical acuity about 1400.00 he said they are the best loupes he has ever had and he has bought just about every one you can imagine. If I had to do it over, I would probably go with those if they could give me a discount. I do sometimes wish my loupes had a little more mag, but they are sufficient.
