Gen Chem Question 62:

"Ca(OH)2 has 2 OHs, HBr has 1H, thus if you used M1V1 = M2V2, you are dead."

So i missed this question today (silly me) and Dr. Jim Romano sends out a clear warning to all of us who forgot about our normality.

btw, i think this destroyer thing is the best test prep material i've ever owned.

Question: for dilutions we don't take normality into account even though there's a couple of H's or OH's right?
 
I have the same question..how do you know when to take normalities into account?
 
you take normality into account whenever the "H" and "OH" are not equal
 
Well I agree Destroyer is the best thing that came around.
With regard to normailty over here you can see that the molecule will dissociate to 2 OH's. Therefore using molarity wont help because there is more than one ion there its 2 OH's.

The general rule is that whenever it says diluted we use Molarity. Otherwise normality is used. (i.e. mixed, titrated, neutralized)
 
It just to take into account the differences in OH concentration when its not a 1:1 ratio.

I actually really love Destroyer. The solutions are golden especially for Orgo and G chem.
