As is fairly common knowledge, most ads presented are now based on search and browser history because Google controls everything. The past few days, I've spent a lot of time on SDN and on r/premed, as well as school websites for post-bacc classes.

So, needless to say, my online ad experience has changed a bit. Most recently, Facebook has decided that I need to purchase a stethoscope! I think it's a bit early for that, considering I probably won't even be applying to schools for 5 years, but Facebook knows all...and it's "Low Price Guaranteed!"

Anyway...just a pointless post about something I saw and chuckled at.

OK, that made me laugh! Google be like "I see you're obsessed with dead bodies, how would you like to run a funeral home?" LOL

I absolutely HATE when Facebook/Google do that. I swear I said to a friend in Facebook chat "I'm thinking about getting a new watch" and ever since then it's been an onslaught of watch ads everywhere I go on the Internet. +pissed+

Shortly after I got the ad for the steth, I got another one for a lion steth cover. It was great! Beats ads for legal books any day, lol!

Not only that, I think at one point I noticed that I was getting ads at home, for items I was searching online at the office. Two different computers entirely. Your search history travels with you.

I just did "relay for life" fundraising, and now every single ad that pops up is american cancer society. It's so annoying!

Because fighting cancer never stops!

^ I'm getting packets/emails from podiatric schools and DO school like crazy, its very strange. Heavy recruitment for those two, then MD doesn't need to recruit at all, so absolutely nothing there. Funny dichotomy

Awhile back I started getting ads for the "date a cowboy" website. Yes, apparently this is a thing. I'd just recently gotten a pair of cowboy boots.

On a more creepy note, I was on match and I had a completely separate email from any other account and also clicked "no" when it asked if I wanted to link match to Facebook. Well a short while later I noticed Facebook kept suggesting friends with guys I was chatting with in match. Double checked, nope not linked, def. checked no....

Cowboy Boots + Match profile = Date a cowboy!

On my end, it seems Facebook and Google have caught on to the fact that I am nowhere near ready to purchase a stethoscope and has reverted to credit card and boxed goods ads. For some reason, these boxed goods are huge right now: boxed razors, wardrobe, snacks, etc. It's weird.

Totally not related to online ads.. but a few months before I turned thirty I started getting all of this junk mail for senior citizen stuff like discounted hearing aid ads and incontinence ads with seniors and senior care plans. Like tons of it.

😛

I was like "yeah, rub it in why don't you?!"

Duuuude...I got some of those as I was turning 21. I was all like, "Excuse me, but my alcoholism is just getting started!"

Those were followed up by ads for educating my kids...of which I have zero. Mail ads can be lovely, too.

I think for awhile target was tracking purchases and could tell a woman was pregnant very early and would start sending coupons and ads for maternity and baby stuff.

The banner ad on here for me for the past week or so has been one for SGU. Not sure what y'all are trying to tell me...but apparently they've been the #1 provider of doctors for first-year residencies for the past 3 years combined!
