So what do the people in the bottom 10-15% do when it comes to applying for GPR/AEGD? Anyone with a poor class rank that has recently gotten into GPR/AEGD have any input?

I know class rank is a big factor in GPR admissions but you still have a chance if you meet other criteria; good LOR, personal statement, volunteer, EC's , decent GPA etc. Focus on the things you can improve. Many GPR's have a lot of spots and even have spots after the match so if you really want to do one you will find a position.

agreed on all the above. also helps to visit programs you're interested in. they like to see u have an interest in THEIR program. Can help... and at that point, anything helps you know

Thanks for the responses. Low class rank, thus low GPA, no ECs, no volunteering, decent LOR. Visiting programs definitely. But I'm not going to have much else. I guess I'll be thrown into the job market and get a gig....? Or if I'm lucky ill find a spot somewhere

Depends on what else you can bring to the table. You have to be able to talk the talk and walk the walk. If you dont have good grades you should at least be competent in clinic i.e show some sort of initiative. get some ECs, volunteering, mission trips abroad.

I know of a few people in my class that were bottom 20% and still got into decent GPRs but they brought something else to the table. Think about what that could be mean for your situation. otherwise you might have to hit the corporate market, which isn't terrible financially, but not a place where you learn any real dentistry.

I know of many people over the years who ranked in the lower portions of their classes and still got in to residencies. Again, as stated by a previous poster, there are many spots after Match where you can still get in. Don't sweat the small stuff and remember there is always a spot somewhere. It's up to you to be flexible and available to go where these opportunities are.

There is still time to volunteer and get some EC's before the next round of applications are due. Of course if you have a pressing reason why you cannot do these, that can also be considered. Lack of interest is not a reason. LOR's are not weighted heavily unless it comes from a higher up or someone who knows the PD. EC's should be meaningful multi day/week/month events, not a one day one hour health fair.
There are lots of post match opportunities. Visiting prior to the match can help you if you make a connection with the PD, or kill your chances if you do or say something off base.
I am a GPR PD.

I am almost in the same boat as mikenorm556. I was wondering if someone could share names of some potential programs that you may know of that may accept students with low gpa/class rank. thank you!

Another different opinion:

In my class, it seemed that almost exclusively those who entered GPR programs either were also applying to specialty programs i.e. very strong students, or those needed more guidance and help throughout DS.

There was apparently no correlation between GPA and GPR.

This observation was quite a surprise to me.

I'm not trying to offend anyone; in fact this seems like a good way to help people get where want to go and to better serve patients.

How low of a GPA are we talking about? what if the GPA is in between 2.7-2.9?.Are they going to throw the application away even if we have a lot of other things on application?

I don't know. But as I say, those at both extremes did them.
