Hello SDN,

I am looking for some success stories. Everything I have found has been a few years old. I applied to dental school and did not receive admission. My gpa is lower 3.1 with a 19 dat. I am starting a thesis master's program. Anyone recently taken this approach and received admission? I am hoping that I do well and with a high gpa and TA hours I will gain admission. My gpa is the worst part of my application. I have extracurriculars such as volunteering, research, and prior professional experience.

I am just nervous that this will not help. Also if you had success, how many semesters did you take before applying? I will have one semester completed when the 2016 application cycle opens and I am not sure if I should apply or wait until I have at least 1 year of classes.

I heard if you do a master's as an attempt to compensate for a poor undergrad GPA, then it should be science intensive. So doing a master's in something like art history won't help - people who go this route do so merely out of personal interest. There are special master's programs that will ensure that you take courses that will help with your goal.

I assume you are graduating after this upcoming semester. If you can bring your GPA up to a competitive level this semester, you may consider applying for the 2016 cycle, otherwise you should wait.

Thank you for your response bwc! I have already graduated. I did not decide on dentistry until after I graduated. I will have 1 semester of the MS in Biology under my belt with apps open.
