Graduated 2004 from U of Michigan with a 2.8 overall GPA and science around the same... took the MCAT just to see, did fairly well, getting a 30, and with some work I think I can do better. I'm ready for another shot at this, and DO looks very interesting. The way I calculate it retaking 4 classes (and getting A's)would raise my science (DO) GPA to a 3.5, but would only raise the overall maybe a .1 . My questions: Retake those classes? Try a post-bacc? Can I retake those classes at a different University or even a community college ? Even if my scenario works out how are my chances with an overall under 3.0? What kind of volunteering should I concentrate on doing ? Shoot for applying this year, or wait until 2007 ? thanks for any help, I've been lurking for a while on these boards and am glad to join the fun

I decided with my low grades going to an English program in Europe was my only option, but took the MCAT just to see, did fairly well, getting a 30, and with some work I think I can do better. Europe didn't work out for me, for the same reason that college didn't either... well, those problems are gone now, and I'm ready for another shot at this, and DO looks very interesting. I've received three acceptances so far with a 2.8 science GPA, 29 MCAT. My cumulative was 3.4 though. It can be done. Get some good experience under your belt. If you look outstanding for reasons other than your GPA, the adcom will take a closer look at you.

good experience... may I ask what you did ? I'm planning on an EMT course, I assume they like it when you shadow doctors, volunteer at clinics... things of that sort ?

I volunteered in a community women's health clinic for about a year and a half, and now run a private women's health clinic. I do ultrasounds, assisting, phlebotomy, etc.

Get a job in the field you're interested in. don't just follow people around or take classes about it- DO IT.

I go to MSU and got 4 interviews and 2 acceptances with a 2.8 Cum and Sci, and a 29(11-11-7) MCAT. My MDapplicants profile can be seen here.

So, it's doable. I'd say, apply and try first, then if you don't succeed, retake the classes and try again. Or the other option is to retake the classes this spring, and then apply for next year, just to be safe.

I'd apply if I were you. You have some strong points and all you'll get out of not applying is a definite no, whereas you might be accepted if you apply!

if you do not get in..you need to raise your gpa first..and then try doing the extra stuff like emt, etc later..retake all your F's, D's first...get your cum gpa at least above a 3, with all the money your going to invest in a school, its important that the school be one of your top 2 or 3 choices..with that being said you need to have decent numbers to get past the initial screening...and make sure ur mcat score isnt too old when you apply..do a search on sdn..it is a very helpful tool in the application process.. best of luck
