I took 2 history classes my freshman year. I got a D in both of them. Those 2 D's are killing my gpa. Should I consider retaking them or would that be a waste of time?

If you think you can do better the second time around, why not. If you cumulative gpa is around 3.5, then I wouldn't worry too much about retaking those classes. my 2 cents

biogeek,
I wouldn't retake those history classes, no body is going to be asking you about U.S history in dental school. Just try and do well in all of your other classes, especially your upper division science classes. Also, you should bear in mind that the ad. comm. will look at the improvements in your grades. Good luck.

Ibo-man, no pun intended, but I think your advice is a little off base. If the two D's are bring down his gpa, and he believes he can do better by retaking them to bring up his gpa. I don't see a reason why he should not.

The ad-comm might not ask about the two history classes, but I can assure you his overall gpa will be a factor in the decision making.
my 2 cents

Depending on what the grade forgiveness policy is at your school, you may want to consider taking them. D's can really hurt a GPA and bumping the grade to a C or B may improve your GPA. HOWEVER, if the rest of your grades are stellar, don't bother and mention it in your essay. Tell them that you don't think your GPA fully reflects your potential due to these D's in History...because you thought you might like history, took some classes, hated the classes and did horribly...and now you've learned and grown from this expereince....blah, blah, blah. Plus, schools will look at your science GPA as well, so if that's higher than your overall GPA, they will take notice and you're all good!

You better check with your school. In my undergrad a D is as good as an F bec you need a min of C in all of your classes. I know most schools are like this so ask bec you may not have a choice and will have to retake it no matter what.
