When should one start to be concerned. I have <6 interview invites for gas of which I don't want to count my home school since they interview all our students. Plenty of prelims and TYs though??? I applied to 35 gas programs. What do you think?? I keep reading about some people with 26+ interviews not knowing what to do....relax and give up some of those interviews for people like me..... kind of makes me mad🙄. Anyone in the same situation????

I emailed some schools. 3/4 of them said my application is still being reviewed. 1/4 said they were full.

I know quite a few students in this situation. Perhaps you're done, perhaps you're not. It's hard to tell. I hope you get more. Just don't let those on here who say they have tons of interviews and are canceling more than you've received get to you. Don't let them diminish your hope. Not everyone has the benefit of the "excess" scenario. There are programs that are still reviewing candidate applications (i.e. most programs outside of the University of Colorado who closed off ERAS applications essentially as soon as they were able to accept them -- weirdos!). You may also be on waiting lists and not know it, meaning interviews may come as others cancel.

Keep your head up.

I agree with you Amyl! I wish this were all over too.

I am waiting to hear from >15 schools and I'm freaking out more and more each day! Its tough when you talk to fellow classmates who have interviewed at all the programs I am interested in yet I haven't even heard from those respective schools.

I'm trying to keep my head up.

you're not alone, i'm in the same boat. I'm waiting on a TON (more than 20) schools that I applied to, and haven't heard a yay or nay. I got interviews early in the season which was encouraging, but since then its been silence. To me, it really doesn't matter that an applicant posts that she/he got 20 interviews, because how many spots are they ultimately consuming come match day? ONE, just like you and me.

Hey timeout, I am in your same situation... besides that I am an img..
I hope this whole situation changes and turns out in our favor.
Good luck and may you get more ivs and match in your top choice..

I understand what you're going through, and the one thing to add to other posts is this: just do the best you can with whatever you got. I know it's making you nervous (and me too), but it's not like your level of effort changes with number of interviews... you're going to try and do well on each interview, regardless of 6 or 10 interviews... so no point spending time worrying; spend the time on preparing for whatever interview you got... just my two cents. Hope this helps. Good luck.
Amyl, thanks for all the nice posts, I think you're one of the most positive "postee" on this forum. See you on the interview trail.

I'm sort of in the same situation. I'm a US Senior, decent scores across the board, with only 8 invites (33 gas programs)... 1 of which I really really really really really want to cancel, but won't unless I get more invites. So I dunno... I guess all you can do is wait. I've received 2 rejections in the past 2 days so I suppose that's better than nothing. The whole match process is very odd.

Anyone know if any other graduate career path does something similar?

I personally don't plan on going to more than 10 interviews and 5 prelims/TY. Hang in there. I called 3 schools last week inquiring about my application and one offfered me an interview, the other two are still reviewing applications. I think I was on the waitlist or something. I just cancelled all my NY interviews even though that leaves me at 8. I honestly cannot fathom living in NY so I gave them up for people who want them. But I think I can live tolerate it for a year 1 year just to experience the hype, so I'm keeping the TY interviews. Good luck.

If you have low invites and you are concerned you have two options. One you can wait and see if you get more. two, you can call schools that have not invited you and express your sincere interest in their program. This is always debated and there are two sides to the argument. When I went through all of this I called schools and was able to get some extra interviews. People are always canceling interviews and interview spots do open. Even if you have 5 interviews you still have a chance just rank them all. Talk to the attendings at your school. See if they will call a school for you. I did this and was able to get 2 interviews.

this is good advice

Has anyone heard of anyone who matched only having 4 interviews????

Especially from last year???

There were 54 US seniors who ranked 4 programs last year, of whom 45 matched and 9 did not.

to the original post,

i can still recall vividly how this process went last year.. i checked this site almost everyhour to know where everyone got their invitation from. i had mood swing, literally everyday. lol  . My advice is, dont overlook this site . Just remember, everyone can only match one spot on their list no matter how many interviews they have. i knew ppl interviewed had 20 + interviews and did not match. all you have to do is focus on all the interviews you have and do well on those. 👍

I agree that you should just do well in the interviews, and try to end up where you think you will fit and enjoy living for 4 years.

But if you knew somebody who interviewed at >20 programs last year and did not match, I can tell you that the person ranked fewer than 13 of those programs.

I would not be at all surprised by a few more invites to come, since I'm hearing a lot of people talking about which interviews they intend to cancel, and about how they don't plan to do all the interviews they've set up.

Those people wiht 20+ interviews would have had to be non US Seniors MD or DO. They would have had to of been international grads or long time ago grads.

My point being that based on last years data a US Senior MD or DO only needs 4 or 5 interviews. to be 100% sure last year they needed at least 13 interviews to match.

i too am trying to figure out just how long of a rank list i need. right now i am holding at 15 as per salt creeps advice ;-) all the places i haven't cancelled would be better than scrambling but would love to cut some out for financial and time reasons if i weren't so scared...
looking at everyone from last year's rank list and where they matched it seemed like everyone got somewhere in their top 5. i hope that is true for us but this year just seems to have more applicants....

Whatever happened to that? Did I miss it? In my case it was more of a post deans letter rejection bonanza. Got rejected from Oregon, UCSF, and Duke within minutes of eachother 2 days after the deans letter came out. Ouch! Nothing like multiple rejections to make you feel 2 inches small.

ditto. worse than the post-christmas greediness withdrawl as a kid.

and honestly, I shouldn't compain, I've been lucky. OHSU was the school I was most interested in besides my home program though, and I got a very polite wait list from them after the dean's letter came out (if they invite me I'll still drop everything and fly out there, but still)

Hmmm...I'm beginning to think that this whole "post Dean's Letter rush" thing is a big, giant myth. So far, after Dean's Letter, I've received one invite, one gas rejection, and a few prelim/TY rejections.

The big story for me, though, after the Dean's Letter is a big, deafening SILENCE...I can hear the crickets in the background as I type!

Same here - I picked up 2 rejections, still haven't heard anything at all from 20+ programs.

Guess now I'm counting on a post-everybody-else-canceled-late-interviews rush.

I'm not so sure that exists, either. 😛

...three invites this last week. =) I am happy today.😀

It's the last minute ....take this spot please wave!!!

i am picking up a few as well. i guess they are due to cancellations. i am not too proud to take a you-were-second choice interview.
thanks to those guys who changed their mind i guess.
if you guys don't want a program by all means cancel as soon as you know....there are other people waiting for programs, invites and interview dates to open up!

Fingers crossed for cancellations. Combined with my lack of pride, this sounds like a recipe for more interviews! Best of luck to all.

I applied to 9, went on 2 interviews and ranked 2. Matched my number one. I promise, I was worried on match monday, to hear that I had matched!

Hey guys, I've been sitting on 4 interviews and MULTIPLE rejections for some time now (I applied to 70 programs 🙁 ). I plan to excel at the ones I have (for which I am very thankful) but should I expect to hear from any more schools..ie Jan/Feb?

yes -- i am getting a few trickling in here and there. did you call or email any of them?

I called and e-mailed some programs and was able to get waitlisted, but I also was told that I would not be receiving any interviews due to "an overwhelming amount of applications." 👎

where are you on the waitlist....maybe posting a couple of places you are waiting to hear from will encourage people to cancel interviews they are on the fence about.
70 interviews...that is the most i have heard! why so many?

I think it's a good idea for you to call the programs... this time of the year, the only way you're getting interview invites is when people cancel... so call and ask them if there are spots you can take. I've gotten a few invites this way, in Cali no less :meanie: Hope this helps, cheers!
