I know this question has been asked before, but I am narrowing the question down to Native English Speaking Americans. Other people will tell stories of friends who make a 23MCAT and 250 USMLE but they were non-native speakers who had more trouble with MCAT (particularly verbal). Others will tell stories of someone who went to the Caribbean but took off large amounts of time to only study.
So excluding those people, do you know anyone who had a Low MCAT (24-27) for whatever reason (sick, bad day, intelligence, ect.), who worked their butt off and came out with a high USMLE OR COMLEX score? Can you also tell what all they did to get that score? Thanks

Hi predodoc,
I think I can help you out here. I know it is rare on SDN to find those low MCATers. I had a 26L MCAT, I had been out for 3 yrs and was working full time as a paramedic while studying for the god-aweful test. it's not an excuse because i have always feared standardized testing and usually was around average. the L is a mystery, maybe i drew a picture instead of answering the question, i don't know, don't care. i got into my state school. I worked my butt off. i studied like i never had before, the motivation being i may have to know this stuff to help someelse...well, except biochem which is just a horrible necessary evil to see if you are committed to medical education.
so, for step 1, i studied really hard for my finals (path/pharm) and i think my school did an awesome job at preparing us. it is probably best to trust your profs and go with that they say/how they test rather than try and buck the system. mine was awesome and really taught me since day one ow to study, how to test, and how to be successful. anyway, i reviewed the best i could for 4 weeks or so and thought i was prepared. took step 1 and REAPEATEDLY found myself thinking back to a lecture, a topic, or something from my first 2 years. I was NOT thinking back to page 232 of first aid/HY, etc. So take the first 2 years seriously, learn it the first time and get hep when you need it, not "later" and you will do fine. i ended up with a 240/97 and the best i have ever done on a standardized test.
hope that helps,
streetdoc

Don't let your MCAT score discourage you. I was very worried about Step 1 after my less than phenomenal MCAT score of 29T. I studied hard my first two years and worked my ass off for 5 weeks and pulled a 252. One score should not dictate how you do in med school and step 1.

I have to echo this response. IMHO, as opposed to the MCAT, its actually easier to study for Step I. So, my story, I had a 27 MCAT (which is not great when eaves dropping over my peers) and I got a 238 on Step (which is higher the alot of those same peers). Just when you get into med school, study study study, go out on Friday, and study.

I'll bite. 23 MCAT (yes I know!!), but 232 Step I and 262 Step II. COMLEX both >700/99%. Screw that stupid MCAT!! 😉

Please share what you did for step 2. 👍
