upon applying this cycle I will have 250-300 or so hours of research in two different labs, one for 2 quaters, and the other for 1.5 years. I will have an undergrad thesis defended, as well as a poster presentation. will the relatively low number of hours hurt me at research oriented institutions, or will the thesis make up for it?

You're looking at this the wrong way. Only having 300 hours isn't as good as having 1000 hours. But it sounds like you got a lot done in you should play that up. Focus on what you have and what that does for you, not on what you don't.

300 hours is considered low now? Things have really changed since 2015.

hahaha bro everyone i see that’s applying to any type of t20 has like 1k plus hours research

That's miles more than I had.

With 2 Iabs, a poster, and an undergrad thesis defended, it sounds like you are far from lacking.

Are you applying MD/PhD?

The thesis doesn't do any thing for me, but what's far more important is that you have learned something about the scientific method. research is overrated as a EC venue anyway.

Such a strange way to assess research experience, though, and a stranger way to assess potential success as a medical student and physician. I guess the app makes people put down hours for all activities? Wonder if an adcom ever made a decision between applicants based on research or volunteer hours--has to have happened at least once.

nope i’m applying md. i appreciate your input, thank you

I had the same situation as you in terms of research. 350 hours with a presentation. I think what really sunk me for top 20s is low research in combination with no leadership and no standout ECs. I applied to 8 T20 schools, and didn’t hear back from any. I received interviews from some T30 schools, however. At every interview, I was asked to talk about leadership roles that I’ve Had.

Maybe the subpar writing on my application also sunk me.
