Hi all,

I searched this topic before and almost all of them are for pre-med students.. I need insight from pre-dent students!!

Okay, I'm a senior and my science gpa is around 3.2🙁 and non-science gpa is 3.5.
I'm not too worried about my non-science gpa but I need/want to raise my science gpa.

since I'm taking a year off anyway, I was considering Post-bac program. So I searched on SDN, and I found that many people are suggesting SMP,
especially Georgetown SMP. Anyway, I checked out SMP on Georgetown website and it says they require MCAT score. eventually, I figured it is not for me..

So, should I go for Post-bac program? Is there any pre-dent students who are in post-bac program, or have done it?

Please share with me!!🙂

I'm working on one now. I am in my first semester of my first year. It's simply a two-year, non-thesis master's program. Essentially it's a way to take graduate level courses meanwhile working towards a master's. That way, if I am not accepted anywhere this year, I will have attained my master's by the time I am accepted the following year. You must also keep in mind that while helping your GPA, you are taking courses in which you may find very similar to some of the ones you will be taking in dental school. If you have any more questions, shoot me a PM.

how are your extracurriculars - volunteering, working, etc? how are your DAT scores?

your sci gpa may not be as bad as you think. my sci gpa is sub 3.0 but i had an interview with columbia.

if you haven't graduated yet: & you haven't taken that many bio/science classes and not too many credits overall, you can just take another year of undergrad with full upper level bio load - get A's, turn in your app first thing next cycle.

or if you want, you can do the post-bacc thing: you can still take classes a la carte (or so i've heard) or you can do that thing the poster before me is doing.

i looked into the georgetown smp but it's really for med school students and i've read (somewhere?) that they discourage you from applying if you aren't a prospective med student.

I have the same science and cumulative gpas as you do. Right now I have 3 interviews and I hope to get some more. Make up for it with your Total Science on the DAT. No worries man, be confident.

You don't have to specifically do an SMP. You can just take other UNDERGRAD level coursework in the sciences and get straight A's. If you take GRADUATE courses your undergrad gpa will not be affected... the new grades will be recorded separately as your graduate gpa.

Thank you guys so much.
I haven't taken DAT yet. I'm going to take it sometime in next semester.
I already bought Destroyer. hehe. I'm going to register Kaplan online course during winter break and study Destroyer after that.
Does it sound okay?

For ECs, I have done a year of research at neurobiology lab (by then, I wanted to go to grad school and study brain but it wasn't fun to work with rats 24/7) and I'm doing shadowing right now. Yeah, I don't have much.. Would volunteering at hospital be good? I'm going to start it during the winter break and continue to do it until I get into dent school.

Anyway, I guess I won't do SMP. I asked my advisor if I can take more classes after graduation. Since I'm an international student, Visa stuff can be kind of tricky. 🙄

Well, good luck people!! 😍
