Hi Everyone,

I am getting nervous with interviews approaching. I realized I will have 60 hours of shadowing by the time interview comes. Is this number too low? I just worry that school may want more than 100 hours and this puts me in a disadvantage...

What do you guys think?😕

I have zero lol I should be worried, not you! I am doing 200 during winter break and the summer and I have 5 interviews planned so far. I think you are fine! 🙂

200 in Winter break!! That's ambitious... Congratz on your interviews. You have great stats!👍

Dont worry too much about not completing 100 hrs, its not like you have to submit your time sheet!! Just watch some videos on youtube and learn the basics lol

How is it that you're applying to dental school with zero shadowing hours? Are you an assistant? Did you get dental experience in other ways?

I think the point of shadowing is the learn about the dental profession and decide if it's something you're willing to invest your time/money in. How else does one get to see the daily life of a dentist if not through shadowing?

On a different note, I think SDN is not a good representation of ALL the dental school applicants out there. Most people on here have butt loads of shadowing hours. Personally, i Have about 50, and I can't even begin to understand how one would do 100+ hours of JUST standing around watching procedures, and following a dentist around for a day. Around 50 hours was enough for me to see a good variety of procedures, learn about the dental office and understand that it's something I'm interested in doing 🙂 I suppose it's never a bad idea to shadow more specialities, though.

You dont learn nothing by shadowing!! Not until you put on those latex gloves and do the actual work!! So shadowing means nothing but its a good indicator that someone wont faint during a bloody procedure!!

I couldn't agree more! Hence, the lack of shadowing hours on my part. I thought it was more important to study for the DAT and my classes than to waste time shadowing. 😀

Just an advice: make sure you dont say that during interview lol, and try to at least have something to say about dentistry..I have a friend that came to office where i work and he shadowed my doctor but he didnt learn anything from him..but A lot from me because i taught him how to clean my room, instuments (infection control), take digital xrays, impressions , and assisted me during cleanings, sealants placements, bleachings and suture removal.he also learned how to interact with patients 🙂
