I took the MCAT a second time but was sick during the week I took it. I scored 504 on the first MCAT and then 496 on the second. I also had to travel across state border to get to testing location for the second MCAT. I received my score June 26 but I never looked at it until this week. I never discussed why I scored lower on the second MCAT in my supplementary applications that I've already submitted. Should I send an updated email referencing my lower MCAT score the second time and why? I'm a Mexican-American California resident who is doing undergrad study in Utah. maybe a couple schools asked if I had any concerns in my app that I wanted to discuss and I never mentioned anything because I didn't know what my second score was out of fear of checking it haha.

You should do your research about schools that only considers the highest MCAT values and strategically add those to your application, while there is still time in the cycle. You might not get in but there is a good chance you could get waitlisted. If you sign up for an August exam, study right and do better, you might be able to send them an update letter later on saying hey guys just thought you should no I retook the MCAT and got bla bla bla. This is kinda risky though because they might pull your application until your new score comes in...

I wouldn't recommend an August retake. Unless OP had been studying hardcore since the last exam, there's just not enough time to significantly improve the next exam score. Another poor MCAT would likely be lethal. Better off to continue with the app cycle, target the "highest MCAT" schools like you recommended, and prepare for the fact that theres a decent chance an mcat retake next spring/summer and reapplication will be necessary

You retook the MCAT when you were sick? Why? Lots of people travel”across the state border” for testing so that’s not an excuse. So you then waited a whole month to check your new MCAT? Really? And in the meantime you completed secondaries and submitted them to schools?

This whole thing will only show schools a consistent level of poor judgement. An eight point drop is significant. I can’t even begin to imagine what schools will think about the drop. But your excuses for the whole thing are really not legitimate. And why on earth did you wait a month to check the score ? And why did you submit the secondaries without knowing the new score? How did you select the schools you applied to?

I recommend taking a few years off to mature, and retaking a 3rd time, but only when you're 100% ready. I have Adcom colleagues would would reject you for the judgement issues alone.

Here's an list of which schools that take the highest MCAT, vs most recent, average, or composite superscore: Multiple MCAT Score Policy School List You'll need to check websites or call to see if any have changed their policy for this cycle, but it gives you a starting point.

What were your score break downs on each MCAT?

What was your GPA and ECs? As a Mexican-American, with a strong personal statement, ECs, letters and a decent GPA you would have had a chance (504) with MD schools, and looked solid for DO. A 496 looks bad so I would give up on this cycle and get ready to study your butt off for your third MCAT the next time you apply.
