cGPA: 3.81
AAMCAS sGPA: 3.81
AACOMAS sGPA: 3.72
MCAT: 29 (12 PS/8 VR/9 BS)

50-100 hours volunteering
50-100 hours shadowing
Few semesters peer tutoring
Worked 20 hours/week all through school (non-medical)
Worked full time in summers (non-medical)
No research experience
Non-URM; first-gen college student; born, raised, went to college in rural area

"Hard" major: one of statistics, mathematics, or engineering.

Schools I'm looking at:

AT Still
AZCOM
U Arizona
Touro California
George Washingotn
LECOM Bradenton
Nova
PCOM Georgia
CCOM
Rush
Marian
U Louisville
Cooper of Rowan
Campbell
Touro Nevada
NYCOM
NYMC
Touro New York
U Toledo
Drexel
LECOM Erie
PCOM
Penn State
Temple
The Commonwealth
Eastern Virginia
Virginia Commonwealth

Any thoughts on adding U Miami -- good idea because I'd love to live in Miami, or am I just flushing my money down the toilet because my MCAT sucks? Maybe throw in Quinnipiac, although I have no idea what their median GPA/MCAT scores are like? Any comments on what else I should add/remove? I don't want to go to rural schools that aren't near a major city, with the exception of schools in my home state.

Any comments? I know some of you are much better at this than I am. 🙂

I am actually interested in this as well. I want to apply to low/mid tier MD schools. The one thing that may hold you back a bit is no research experience and many of the work you have done is non-clinical. However, if you have a good GPA and MCAT you should definitely have a chance at low tier MD schools. I am looking at what low tier MD schools to apply to and I want to make sure that they are out of state friendly. I am an Arizona resident and I am definitely applying to U of A Phoenix and Tucson but I am stuck on where else to apply... any ideas?

Numbers are good...you should have plenty of interviews. With public MD schools, stick only with those in your home state, if any. Maybe those in the surrounding states as well. U Miami, I'm very doubtful on, alas. throw Rosy Franklin, Loyola, Tulane and Creighton onto the list and you're set.

Do you think Creighton, Loyola, and Tulane are worth the application fee? My MCAT is below their 10th percentile.

Bump. 😳

ihave heard anecdotally that Tulane prefers people with unique backgrounds, so if you're cookie cutter traditional you may not get any leniency, but i don't have any facts to back this up with. if you're looking to cut schools, you may want to look into this for yourself. perhaps others can comment, as I'm just another applicant. good luck

Jefferson? Also, I don't think U of Louisville is worth applying to OOS with your stats. I had similar stats, from MD, and I didn't even get looked at. Anecdotal, but may be worth saving the fee.

Anecdotally, I don't believe you'd have a great shot at UM. With that said, its a little bit of extra money to potentially land a dream location and you have good stats. Might as well try.

Unfortunately I don't have the requisite LORs for Jefferson. Thanks for the heads up about Louisville, guess that one is off the list.

Too many DOs. Replace some with:

Vermont, Creighton, MCW, Albany, Hofstra, Wright State ( take lots so OOS), Rosalind Fraklin, and Loyola

With your stats if you apply early engough you shouldn't be applying to DO the first time around. People who do often end up with regrets. You should consider retaking the MCAT if this cycle doesn't work out ( i think it will work out if you apply to enough md schools) and then applly DO next year. Again, I think you should be fine for MD this year.

If money's an issue, then yes. You have plenty of other good chocies.

Alright, thank you for your input. 🙂

Thanks, I'll look into MCW and Creighton. Unfortunately Wright State OOS COA is beyond ridiculous, something like $86k/year. I'm at or below 10th percentile MCAT for Albany, Hofstra, and Loyola. I think I'm far too white bread to get in with such an MCAT.

I really like this list. Good schools in your gpa/MCAT range. 👍

Be careful with the Arizona schools... Although they can accept up to %50 out of state they have not not done so yet. (From what I have seen Phoenix accepted a higher percentage than Tucson). So I would look into them a bit more before you waste the money in applying! =)

Wright will give you in-state after first year 😉

Either way, I think the OP made a very idealistic list in which he/she has a good chance in getting into any of them. Some people apply to top heavy schools with these type of stats and IMO waste money unless you have connections/legacy.

I was thinking of Wayne State. Wright State is only 17.5% OOS. 😳

Final list for anyone else applying with similar stats and residency:

A.T. Still
AZCOM
Western U
Touro California
Quinnipiac
George Washington
LECOM Bradenton
Nova
PCOM Georgia
Rush
CCOM
Marian
Campbell
Cooper of Rowan
Touro Nevada
NYCOM
NYMC
Touro New York
U Toledo
Drexel
LECOM
PCOM
Penn State
Temple
The Commonwealth
Eastern Virginia
Virginia Commonwealth
Medical College of Wisconsin

Thanks for the input, everyone.

With your stats, 15 DO schools may be excessive. Include DMU for DO and drop some of the others.

Agreed. Pick your favorite 10 DO schools and apply to those. Save yourself some money.

PCOM, CCOM, DMU, KCUMB, NOVA, Western, and AT Still are widely considered to be the best.

The universe has conspired against me throughout my entire life and I have absolutely no confidence in my ability to get into medical school. I'd rather have 15 DO schools that are surer bets than save a few hundred bucks or substitute more MD schools that I will almost definitely be rejected from.
