wierd question:

lets say you get an interview at a low/mid tier school... and everyone there has superly amazing stats. does that mean that you would have a bad chance of getting in due to bad coincidental luck? or do the people interviewing with you that day not effect your chances?

Totally depends on the school. At many places, once you've gotten an interview you've gotten past the paper application cuts, and may even be on even footing. More than a few schools tell students that everyone invited for an interview has an equal shot at getting in. Other places will revisit the stats, but still may give the interview huge weight, meaning if you blew everyone else away, you would get in over folks with higher stats. The schools don't just accept people from objective factors. The interview is not even close to a formality. Schools are truly looking for folks who will be a good fit for their school. They want to find people who not only have adequate numbers, but more importantly people they would enjoy working with as colleagues down the road. So I wouldn't give your competition much thought. They may be SOL for having YOU in THEIR group, numbers notwithstanding.

But yeah, they tend to review people as an adcom in blocks and so people who interview close in time are going to be looked at in the same mindset. If you were the worst of your day, the fact that you drew a particularly good group could certainly hurt you. But since you don't actually know what the school considers a good fit and is lookng for, you won't really know that.

Heck I'm EXPECTING to be the lowest numbers at my first interview. Yet, in my opinion (admittedly still a bit ignorant because I haven't actually been to this schools yet), I fit in perfectly with this school. I plan on showing them that on that day to the point that my numbers wouldn't make a difference either way.

Your opinion is the only one that doesn't matter. They have to decide if you are a good fit for what they have in mind, not vice versa. You can't show they you are a good fit because you have no clue what they are going for. Just be a polished version of yourself and see how things work out.

I know this :] I guess I was just trying to answer the OP in a flashy way of saying "I wouldn't worry about it, just do what you can."

probably won't matter all that much. BUT, be prepared to answer this question,

"so, I noticed you don't seem to have the best academic performance record, care to comment?"

Don't think about stats at your interview. Don't worry about the stats of everyone else. The interview is to get to know YOU as a person and observe how YOU function in social settings. Also, it could be a good thing if you have lower stats because it shows that possibly something else about your application stood out above the rest.
