For 2005 cycle,

If you are the one you think with lowest stats. Please share your experience of getting accepted at NYU. This might give us hope for 2006 session. Also, were you harrased during your interview.

Thanks,

2PAC-

My stats were fine, but I still kinda got grilled during my interview at NYU...but I think it was just the interviewer that I had. I don't think he was trying to harass me, but he definetly tried to point out my weaknesses right away, and challenged some of my answers. I think he is like that with everyone though...from what I've heard from other applicants who have interviewed with him. Probably just trying to see if he can get us to freeze up and look like deer in headlights...just hold your own and be confident and you'll be fine.

Looks like we had the same guy...

I walk into his office...he tells me that he needs 5 min. to look over my application. He does so. Then, he says, "Yeah, you had C's in orgo, I dont think you are cut out for dental school, are you sure you want to go into dentistry?". For the next half hour, he basically sat there and questioned my ability. It was freakin sweet. 🙄

Remind me again why I am not applying to NYU? 😉

So when did u guys interview at NYU(Rezdawg and Irene). My friend has an interview sometime in the coming week. He is my best friend(brother) and I really want him to get in this year since he is 2 years older to me. It doesnot seem like they interview this late but I believe Either this is going to be a very good experience or just a waste of his time and expensive trip.

What do u guys think.

When I interviewed, it was in early feb.

At this point in the game, Im not sure how filled their class is. If he has no other acceptances, then by all means he needs to go. Even if their class is full and they are interviewing for waitlist spots, the plane ticket needs to be bought and accomodations need to be made. Its worth the shot, imo.

Good luck.

Thanks for an encouraging reply.

I will make sure I will pump him up for this interview. Do you know anybody who got in interviewing that late. How fast do the waitlist move?
Do they conside the waitlist for the next year as well?

thanks 👍

although this is just speculation, i imagine the waitlist at NYU moves pretty quick. a lot of people use it as a safety school and decline acceptances due to the very high cost of tuition and living in New York. that, plus the fact that the class size is over 200 leads me to believe that the waitlist would move very quickly.

Thanks ISU_steve,

What is the best way to prepare for the interview? And what is the name of individuals who interview the candidates. what r their names and who is the tough one?

Which I don't get. Who doesn't want the chance to live in New York at least once??! It's New York!! NEW YORK! That decided the matter for me.

Hey 2Pac, tell your bro to keep his spirits up. The interview is really a breeze.....just hold your own when they start pressing you like that. They just wanna see that youre strong enough to not get the **** scared out of you.

My interview last year was May 20th. It doesnt mean anything. He can still get in for the Class 2009. But make sure that he asks. Just say good things about NYU, NYC, and everything else they ask you. And you should be good to go.

Lemme know if u have any other questions

Later

I have a C+ in Orgo. My interviewer didn't drill me for that, although he did ask me why I withdrew a class.

I interviewed in late november...I agree that its worth a shot...I'm thinking that NYU must be one of the only schools interviewing this late, so that at least shows some opportunity. If I were in his shoes, I think that if I didn't at least go to the interview, there would definetly be some amount of regret...just b/c ya never know what would have happened! The price of the plane ticket and hotel accomodations are worth the price of at least having no regrets. Best wishes to your bro...I wish him lots and lotsa luck! :luck:

2pac... just look at interview feedback on this site. Those are the only questions you need to know. Also, have a few questions for interviewer such as "since you've been in dentistry for so long...is there anything different that you would have done?" "what do you like the best about dentistry?" etc etc. Just say have your bro say “Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh” and he should be fine.

Ok, haha, I hope there are no adcoms skimming through these threads, but, this is actually a good way for your bro to prepare. Prepare for the worst and expect the best!

I personally had Dr. Hittleman, who is actually a psychologist, not a dentist; which makes sense b/c I felt as though he was picking my brain. If I remember correctly, he said that he teaches some class associated with pain management? He really wasn't as harsh w/ me as Rezdawg's experience, but my other interviews went very smoothly in comparison to this one, just b/c he made me defend myself a whole lot! My personal statement was read right in front of me, which honestly was very intimidating. Then I had a few Cs from freshamn year, which were all in Bio, which is my major, so I was questioned about that. I was also questioned about my sub-par QR score on the DAT. Then some of my answers to general questions like "What do you realllllly love about dentistry" were challenged, b/c I sort of addressed that in my personal statement, but he wanted me to cut to the chase and describe what I "reallllllllllllly" love about it.

Anyway, after all that, things eased up and he let me ask all the questions I wanted, and was really good about answering them them really thoroughly. Then he gave me his card and said I could contact him if I come up with any other questions about the school that I didn't get to ask before. By the end of the whole thing, the tone was completely different than it was in the beginning. Dr. Hittlemen ended up being a really nice guy, he just happens to be one of the admission officers that puts people on the spot to see if they can handle it. So just make sure your brother knows not to get discouraged even if they do grill him...sometimes it can be for the best b/c if he stays confident and holds his own, he'll really leave a lasting impression.

I had Dr. Kenneth Allen as my interviewer. Great guy! His MO was question-reply-write notes in your file. He will go down a list of questions, and periodically tries to trip you up with questions about the honors system.

He was really nice, let me know that I got into the school a month before the letter went out.

Thats hilarious! My application was looked over right in front of me as well....I felt so awkward, I just sat there and stared at the floor the whole time he was flipping through my file. Must be the same guy....

Yup, we had the same dude. Hittleman. Seems like he was a little tougher on me, he loved the fact that I got C's in orgo...I think he brought it up maybe 5 or 6 times throughout the interview. Its a weird feeling when you answer the questions regarding poor performance in a class, and then have him randomly bring it up again 5 min later, and then 6 min later, and then 3 min later, etc...

Basically, it got old...real fast.

You know u guys messed up in a class or two but my brother is going to be in trouble. He has 2 masters and a messed up undergrad GPA. Also his scores in RC and PAT are low. But rest he has it going for him. Oh man what a 180 degree flip in his grades. He went from 2.6ish to 3.9something in his graduate studies. And that too I am talking about Engineering subjects. So lets see what Dr. Hittleman has to say about his application. You know the bottom line is these interviewers are trying to see check your maturity level.

It's way way easier to do well in grad than undergrad. Trust me on this. Every one I know had a minimum 0.5 GPA increase.

yeah... i don't know why... but it seems that anything below about a 3.5 graduate gpa is downright bad.

i don't quite understand it... and hopefully never will since i don't plan on taking any graduate classes (except for dental school).

I believe because of the strict requirements you have no other option than performing well. In my school if u get 2 C's u are out. Maturity is an issue as well, people get mature. In my brothers case an increase from a 2.6ish GPA to 3.8ish GPA was a huge jump. I am not talking about easy business major, here I am talking about Engineering and trust me guys its not easy.

peace out- 👍

OMG...Rezdawg...thats crazy! You must have been praying for that interview to end, asap. I know I wanted mine to be over, but mine lasted for a friggin' hour!! 😱

2pac...your brother will be considered a nontraditional applicant, but a lot of times that can be an awesome advantage, especially considering the 2 masters and the amazing gpa improvement. I'll cross my fingers that your bro gets a not-so-harsh interviewer. 😀

Thanks for the encouragement, I will pass it over to him.
