Loyola Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey again stritch '12ers, my roommate and i are still looking for a couple of guys to share our 4 br apt in forest park. rent around 575, close to school, newly built, outdoor patio, etc etc. pm if interested and we'll chat.

So, I've been a long time stalker of the boards and have received tons of good information. I've waited to post anything for awhile until I had some good news. Good news...I'll be joining all you other Loyolites this fall. Just heard on Friday the 16th and I'm really excited. My sister graduated from Stritch in 2003 and she told me I wasn't allowed to go anywhere else. So, I guess the next step is to look for housing. I have no idea where to start.😱 Anyone who has any questions or just wants to shoot the breeze feel free to write anytime.

Congrats Solano, nskittles and everyone!

I'll also be joining you guys this year. Just trying to figure out the housing and transportation stuff right now. I'm really excited to move to a colder place.

WOW! Just checked the financial aid offer online and 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱! Anyone else freak out a little? I seriously went into this with the understanding that I would probably come out of school with 200k+ in loans, but seeing it all there in black and white is still a rather large slap in the face. I didn't realize the subsidized Stafford was capped at such a low amount. 50k in unsubsidized loans a year is pretty scary.

I had the same exact response.... After a few weeks of panic and denial you eventually imagine you might be able to develop the blind eye that many med students seem to have regarding their loans. I'm not there yet, but I can see that that's the only way to cope.

I think most of us are in the same place right now (except for the lucky few with tuition taken care of in some unknown manner)...I'm guessing it gets better when school starts and we are too busy to think about money for the next four years!

Well, as a graduating student from SSOM, I didn't have quite as many fin aid hurdles to jump through as you guys do (sorry!), but I too worried before school started about 1) the debt and 2) My lifestyle during school. What if my car broke down? What about GROCERIES? Is going on vaction realistic?

I can tell you that it's not that bad, trust me. First off, the fin aid department at Stritch is AWESOME. They will explain things to you at the level you need it explained, from "fin aid for absolute dummies" to "I was a CPA before medical school". Second, yes, nothing distracts you like memorizing the crebs cycle, so there's always academic-distraction to occupy your time. Third, I was able to live what I felt was "appropriately" during medical school. I did not exist on roman noodles, but I didn't buy a BMW either. I was able to go out to eat and celebrate after each exam. I had some savings in my "Just in case" fund. I was able to get my car fixed as needed, etc. But no big vacations to Hawaii. The fin aid department will contact you if you need to "do" anything with your loans during your 4 years here. They have your back to help you through this. They do not take your debt lightly, and neither should you.

Then, when you get to my stage, you start worrying about the loans all over again! This time it's along the lines of "I have to pay WHAT each month?". But even now the fin aid department discusses your options for paying or not-paying during residency. They look at all your loans and your entire situation and pretty much tell you what to do.

Bottom line, I think I could be considered "a worry-wart" about things, especially loans and debt. But you know, it really didn't even enter my mind much during school, other than when the fin aid office told me to do something about them.

Another quick point, for those of you thinking about strategy with loans. If you take out too much stafford loans, if you make a payment within 180 days (I think that's right) you can pay it back to the company without incurring any interest. So you may want to take out all the staffords you can, and if you get situated and realize it was too much, you can repay it back. But talk it over with the fin aid department, as it seems these rules change every year.

Wow, Chuck Deli thanks for talking me off the ledge. Rationally, I know it's not as big a deal as it seems, or else there wouldn't be any doctors. It's good to hear from someone who has made it through though.

Hey all, I've finally decided to retract my waitlists and commit to Loyola next year. Feels pretty good, I should have done it sooner, ha.

Anyway, I'll start a facebook group tonight (if there already isn't one?).

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Well, it broke my heart when I withdrew from Loyola today, but I ultimately felt that D.C. and the health care policy opportunities there were too persuasive to ignore. I'm really sorry not to be classmates with you guys - everyone I've ever met that goes (or went) to Loyola have been amazing people. I'm jealous of the fantastic four years you'll have there, and hopefully I'll bump into some of you in fourth year (I intend on spending all but three months in Chicago!). And I hope you enjoy a relatively happy and stress-free Loyola first year in my honor! (GW's curriculum is FAR from student-friendly. :scared: )

I know it's no consolation for losing Phoenix, but I just wanted to post here and officially join Loyola's class of 2012. 🙂

Is anyone currently living in Chicago? We should plan some kind social event/happy hour...I work across the street from Northwestern and have grown fond of the Elephant and Castle at the corner of Huron and St. Clair...

Awww, I'm sad we won't be classmates. 🙁 (And I certainly would have been game for Elephant & Castle.) But congrats on your decision - I know how grueling and sleep-depriving choosing between two med schools can be. At least now you can relax and enjoy the summer. 🙂

Ok, now I'll officially bow out of this thread. :hello:

I just got the call today that i will be joining you guys this fall! I'm super excited and can't wait to meet everyone. What has everyone been looking at in terms of housing?

Congratulations Lena! In terms of housing, have you contacted the admissions office? They can point you in the direction of some of the Loyola websites that can help you start the housing hunt / roommate search.

I found my place on Craigslist when I started here (because I didn't know that there was the roommate service here).

If you have any questions, feel free to drop a PM. I am sure you will be very happy here, and again - Congrats!

I would definately be up for a happy hour! I work on the northside of chicago at broadway and montrose, mondays and thursdays are best for me 🙂

Since tonight is the (sob) last night of "LOST" until (sob) next January, Thursday works for me too...but pretty much every night works, i love finding reasons not to work out after work 🙂 As far as housing, I met my awesome roommate today and we're thinking about adding a third person to our housing situation. We're both female, but would be open to a male or female roommate...we're thinking the Wicker Park neighborhood is perfect, and we're looking at an August 1st-3rd move-in date (it's the weekend after orientation, so there shouldn't be too much going on). Send me a PM if you're interested and we can talk! Conrats to the new people here...so excited for school to finally begin.

apple 🙂

Yea orientation starting on the 28th is unfortunate due to rentals starting on either July 1 or August 1. I'm actually heading out there next week to check out some places in Oak Park. Looking forward to it.

When is everyone else moving to Chi??

Moving over to Forest Park this weekend. I'm sure you guys are pretty much the same people as facebook, but if you haven't checked out the new facebook group do it, do it, do it. Several people are talking about roomate stuff. Cheers.

If things work out, I'm living with a couple second years and another first year in forest park. Our lease starts on July 15th, so I'll probably be out there around then. I should probably go out before and look at the place before signing a lease, but I'm not real picky and I figure they wouldn't move there if it was a crap hole. Is that dumb? 🙁 I'm being so cheap now that I'm seeing these huge loan numbers, and I don't want to fly out just to find a place. Hope my luck is good. :luck:

Hey all,
I am getting settled in Forest Park (loving it there!) and also pretty bummed about LOST being over for a while. Sigh...I heart Penny and Desmond. Thus, I would more than love to partake in some sort of happy hour! Are we talking sooner rather than later?

And I just realized the time i posted this (11 on a saturday night)...in my defense my fam is in town for my lil bro's graduation. I was taking a break from the oh-so-engaging late night conversation, ha. That is all.

Any advice or "secret routes" for getting from the northwest side (Kedzie and Lawrence) to Loyola everyday? I was planning on leaving early each morning to avoid traffic (between 5 and 6) but for those days I won't/can't, does anyone have any suggestions?

I was thinking about Irving Park all the way down to 1st Avenue.
