Anybody have any info on this program? I searched but with little returns. Any info is much appreciated. Just trying to get some insight on the program before applications go out.

I externed there for 2 weeks a year or so ago....I can tell you what I recall although much may have changed

It's definitely a "hidden" 4-yr program. Very solid, though not on the map very much as far as notability outside Chicago.

First of all, it's at the private hospital campus of Loyola/Stritch med school about 30 minutes outside Chicago. It's a big trauma area so they get a lot of business, but the facility is private so everything's very nice and new. Definitely one of the nicer facilities I've seen over all.

They take place in the main hospital, and then in a private practice setting in a building on the same campus, which they share with the GPR. In the hospital they have their in patients and are in the OR pretty regularly. In the private clinic they do sedations and pull teeth, etc. all day. There are people rotating all over, so both places are covered most days from what I remember

When I was there, they had just gotten a new program director, who has since left Loyola, so I can't say much about the program administration. Chimino (sp?) is the current chair. He was there when I was, and seemed like a pretty cool guy. Pretty friendly, and trained in plastics, so they had a pretty broad scope. The other full time faculty there (Dr. Ads) also seemed pretty well rounded. He went to Emory if I remember correctly.

They also have Dr. Mercuri there, who is a big name amongst custom TMJ implants, and the residents work with him when he operates, so you'll get a pretty broad exposure.

Plus you're down the street from Chicago which is an AWESOME city. Residents live closer to the hospital just because it's unreasonable to drive in that traffic daily both way, but the commute is very reasonable for going into the city whenever you want.

I'm sure I'm missing details, but that's what comes to mind. I remember if being a very strong program, definitely worth the application and consideration.

2thguy82 is pretty accurate when he describes Loyola as a 'hidden' program.

I externed at the program two years ago and am currently a resident at Loyola.

Dr. Cimino is the chair. He is dual trained and a board certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Ads is the program director. He trained at Emory.

The program is a 4-year, with two residents per year. We are a full service program minus cancer. Loyola has a strong ENT program that manages all H &N cancer cases.

We see plenty of trauma to stay busy but not up all night every night like Parkland. It is a level 1 trauma center with a trauma range from just west of the city to most of the western suburbs of Chicago. We are not a program that has anatomic limits as to our trauma treatment. We will treat top to bottom of the facial skeleton with several panfacials yearly.

The orthognathic program is growing at a steady pace since Dr. Ads began as the program director 2 years ago. Our surgical coordinator said prior to his start we did single digit orthognathic cases yearly. This year roughly 40-50 including part-time faculty cases. With expected growth to continue.

As a first year, we help run sedations in clinic, see all of Dr. Ads private patients with him and rotate at the VA. The VA is an excellent rotation for dentoalveolar surgery. In my first 3 months there I placed 15-20 implants, ramus block grafts, sinus lifts along with limitless extractions, tori, preprosthetic surgeries.

We treat a countless number of pathology cases with ENT or Plastics harvesting free flaps for us if needed.

There are a fair number of TMJ cases done as 2thguy mentioned. Mercuri pioneered the TMJ concepts total joint. He has recently retired but we have a part-time attending that has started placing them as well.

Surprisingly, we have only had a few externs each year but I would advise for anyone interested to contact the program.

This is great info, thanks to both of you. Does anyone have an update since these were written a year and a half ago?
I'm most interested to hear what's going on with the program director position....

Please update this program. I know they are looking for another surgeon. Any info please. Someone has to have some recent news about this program.
