Having a difficult time determing which would be better...

Rush

1. In Chicago
2. Great hospital/Research
3. No gym

Loyola

1. In Maywood (13 miles outside of Chi)
2. Block classes
3. Nice gym
4. Not as established research etc.

I live in downtown... any locals want to chime in??

I'm struggling through your debate myself (although at this point, it's completely hypothetical for me because I've heard nothing from Rush😀 ). Still, I agree- weigh the pros and cons. For example, you live in the city- if you live in Rogers Park, a drive is a drive, so who cares if you're going to Maywood (Loyola) or Medical Campus (Rush). If you live in Bucktown or the west loop, though, then by all means, make your life easier and go to Rush. Also, did you consider research opportunities? What about mission statements?- theirs vary quite a bit. If you want to chat more, PM me.

I think it's much easier to get to Rush from Rogers Park. During rush hour, you can get there in about 45 minutes using the Purple and Blue lines. Commuting to Maywood would take much longer - you have to take the L to the Metra, and then transfer to a bus to get there.

Not that the OP said he lives in Rogers Park.

I would pick Rush over Loyola for the better hospital system. Plus the people there really seemed to like each other.

Just an example, and FYI- only the red line runs to Rogers Park, so you'd have to switch to the blue to get to Rush. Not trying to be a knowitall- I just used to live that commute.

The red line does take forever, but the purple line also runs from Howard to the loop during peak times, express. You do have to switch to blue, though. Still, if you line things up right, and we're talking rush hour when there are plenty of trains, you can get on the purple train and arrive at Polk or the medical district 45 minutes later. You could also transfer to the pink line at Clark and Lake; then you'd only have one stop before getting to Polk, so probably less than 40 minutes total.

I would pick Loyola if for no other reason than the schedule. We are out of lecture here normally by noon - seems like the Rushers are in lecture until around 4.

I dont mean to jack anyone's thread, but maybe someone here can help me out: what is loyola admissions email address?

It's not on their site, and they weren't picking up their phone earlier.

Thanks in advance! 😀

Do you live near the school or commute?
How do you like the class blocks etc?

i live on the northside, in wrigleyville, and make the commute to loyola every day. it doesn't bother me at all. traffic on the eisenhower isn't bad since i'm heading out before the heart of rush hour.

i don't think either school has a "better" hospital. loyola has a more respected cardiology department, rush has a better ortho department. both are among the premier hospital systems of the chicago area, so you can't go wrong there.

it really comes down to where you feel more comfortable. as far as prestige and quality of education, both schools are more or less equal. rush has a more traditional curriculum with long days of lecture while loyola has less lecturing and more small group work.

i obviously am partial to loyola since that is the school i chose to attend. i have no complaints about loyola. i think in every respect they want us to succeed and they make sure we have all the tools we need to do just that.

since you mentioned research, loyola is actually making a strong push towards increasing research opportunities for students. if you're interested in research, there are many many opportunities at loyola. in fact, if you check out this month's issue of Chicago magazine, there's a few loyola docs mentioned in the article on breakthrough medicine...even a doc working on stem cells.

i couldn't be happier with my decision to attend loyola. and, don't let the commute or the location of the school be a big factor. we have a lot of students who live in the city, and the commute is not an issue for any of us. however, i will say that if you don't have a car, taking public transit to loyola would be a nightmare.

they don't have one unfortunately. you'll have to keep trying the phone. they will be working throughout winter break though (i know, i'm giving a tour to an interviewee on the 27th). so try calling again after christmas, and you'll get through.

i just left chicago for the semester a week ago, and reading the conversation about cta routes makes me realize that i miss chicago quite a bit....maybe i'll be back at loyola in the fall 😀.

i don't have much to add, as i love loyola and i haven't heard from rush (but certainly would go interview if i did hear...). i job shadowed two ophthalmologists for a few months this summer. one is a loyola alum and the other is a rush alum, both awesome, awesome doctors.

it seems to me that either school would probably be a winning situation.

also, i had an internship at the core center this last semester, which is through rush, and if you're interested in infectious disease, that link could be an opportunity. (though i would occasionally see people in loyola coats there as well 😉)

i think that might be the real key to the whole situation. when you said that, it reminded me that i see people in loyola, northwestern, uic, rosalind franklin and rush coats pretty much on a daily basis at loyola. there really is a lot of intermingling between the chicago area schools it seems. of course, i'm only a first year, so i don't have a whole lot of experience, but i certainly do see a lot of people from different places roaming the halls.

Cool thanks for the tip! I will be calling them shortly!

Also, does the whole "Catholic-Jesuit tradition" thing play a large role @ Loyola? It seems emphasized quite a bit. I wonder how non Christian/Catholics feel at that school..

The Jesuit mission is not meant strictly for Christians. Loyola is a very open university. I say this because I currently go to the undergrad and I am non-Christian.

You get asked "why Loyola" at the interview, and clearly, there is some tie-in with their philosophy you like that relates to Jesuit causes. Helping the indigent and those who lack the ability to help themselves in addition to providing care for the total person (mind, body, spirit) are fundamental concepts that radiate throughout medicine and transcend any one religion. As such, you should look to see how a school employs a philosophy as opposed to the absolute. In my decision of Loyola vs. Rush, this is a big deal.

BeanerMD, have you heard from Rush? Have you had any tfurther houghts on what you would do if accepted at both? I can tell you that I 100% dont have a clue at this point... I should just call Loyola and Rush and tell them that I will be withdrawing from both schools and going to SIU because of the cheap tuition. 😱

Just a quick FYI - I live in Bucktown and go to Loyola, am not catholic or even christian for that matter, but really love the jesuit commitment to social justice. I think Rush and Loyola are pretty equivalent as schools in terms of education, collegiality, and reputation. Loyola was a better fit for me in terms of matched values and that is worth the extra 10-15 minutes of a commute. If I had decided to go to Rush, I'm sure I would have still had a great medical education.

I know this doesn't really help you make a decision, but I hope I've made the point that you have a win-win decision to make.

Haven't heard a thing (STILL) from good ole' Rush...but I know the committee is meeting about my Loyola application today. I couldn't be more excited (!!!). Wish me luck kids, I should know by Friday🙂

Geez, if I was lucky and fortunate to get into both Rush and Loyola, the first thing I'd do is by myself a beer and say congrats- those are two most excellent programs (I highly recommend you do the same). Second, yes, listing pros/cons helps me, too. Since I know you're knee deep in that thought process, I'll tell ya, my gut feeling is with Loyola. I respect both programs immensely, I've worked with individuals who are the products of their programs, and my intuition is that Loyola is a better fit for me. It's a personal choice, but now you know mine🙂

I really hope you hear from Stritch... I will be rooting for you! When you get the interview, I would be happy to share my experience and things that really worked for me in connecting with my interviewers. As far as figuring out where to go, I think I am going to put a lot more thought into it over the next coming months. May 15th is around the corner... 😱
