Can anyone tell me what these years are like? How much responsibility/"hands on experience" med students get there during these years?

Is it more dependent on the competency of the student in the eyes of the resident or attending? I would be frustrated if all i EVER did was observe, though, i wouldn't want too much responsibility either, i guess.

Any input would be great. Thanks.

Don't have too many specifics myself but a friend of mine is an M4 there. According to him he had tons of responsibility and played major roles in the management of several patients at a time. You will get as much hands-on clinical exposure there as you will just about anywhere else. Don't forget, I think Hines VA is about the largest VA hospital in the U.S. You may get more than you bargain for over there alone. Plus, Loyola Medical Center serves an underserved area with lots of public aid patients.
