Hi everyone.
I really need some help with this. I really liked case and their curriculum however I had a so-so time at their second look. Loyola was great since it was near chicago and the students were very nice. I know that case has a great reputation, but I am hesitant because of the second look experience. I liked loyola but i am hesitant because i was only there for the interview and i do not like maywood at all. help!

there's a thread right now comparing loyola and jefferson...read the thread to get some of our thoughts on loyola. i don't know anything about case. most people don't like maywood...its kind of a dump, but we don't live in maywood, either. i live in forest park, which is pretty nice. lots of our students live in oak park and north riverside, too, which are both quite nice. and there's a number of students who live in downtown chicago, too, so whatever you wanted to do would work. loyola's a great school. feel free to ask any specific questions.

see that's what kind of worries me. I have yet to see anyone really go all happy over case. there is a lot of love for loyola. i was hoping that this would give me some ideas of how other people felt about case.
thanks though!

IMO, I think a lot of people aren't nuts about Case because it's in Cleveland. Many people appear to be attributing their happiness to the school's city. I myself will be leaving Chicago for Cleveland. While I'm not TERRIBLY excited about the move, I am extremely excited about my new school. I don't think I'll have too much free time to be living it up in the city's nightlife so I'm not placing too much emphasis on that.

Case will probably provide you with more research opportunities, so take that into consideration.

A close friend of mine is an alumnus of Stritch and really enjoyed his experience; said the students were really valued and that the clinical training was excellent.

Also consider financial stuff. Aren't Loyola grads amongst the highest in student debt? If I'm wrong, please correct me.

yeah i am no too worried about cleveland because I actually grew up there. I just need some help about the actual atmosphere. the poll is helping though. thanks guys!

Just a quick question for you. When did you set your deadline for making a choice? I mean May 15 is close, don't the schools need to know by Monday? If you snail mail, that could take a few days.

It would just suck if you sent in something to a school saying you didn't want to go there, but they get it late, and your first choice takes back your acceptance because you have multiple acceptances on May 15. Does that happen?

I'm a first year at Case and I can say that I absolutely love the school and my class. Apart from the excellent academic and research opportunities Case offers, the students here are very friendly, supportive, and helpful, as well as very fun. This is what I both heard and experienced during my visit when I was interviewing (I wasn't able to attend 2nd look). I'm sorry you didn't enjoy second-look weekend -- I wasn't able to make it to any events so I can't comment on that, but I've actually gushed with several friends about how much we love our class and how great the students are.

In terms of Cleveland itself, I've actually found that while there isn't an overabundance of things to do here, the bars and clubs both downtown and around Cleveland Heights is a lot of fun - especially when a large part of your class shows up after exams to party and have fun, which is often the case with our class.

Anyway, good luck making your decision - I know that everyone has their own unique fit when it comes to schools, so I hope you make the decision that will make your 4 years in med school most fulfilling.

So yeah, I didn't LOVE Case's 2nd look in terms of the activities or constantly going through the same dialogue w/ other prospective students. But did you talk to current students during 2nd look? I talked to a ton, and they were universally extremely happy and very enthusiastic about Case (except that one 4th year during our panel, he was terrible, but there's some unhappy people everywhere). Their enthusiasm coupled w/ the new curriculum, the administration and faculty who also seemed awesome, etc. are what pushed me towards Case.

this is extremely helpful. i didnt really get to talk to any of the upper classmen, so i was stuck having the very repetitive convos with everyone else. I really do love the curriculum!

Is loyola in a nice part of chicago?

loyola is in maywood...a suburb of chicago (~10 miles from michigan ave, what i'd call 'downtown'). maywood is not a nice area, but its surrounded by nice neighborhoods, where the students live. some of the students even live downtown. but the neighborhoods around loyola (oak park, forest park, river forest, north riverside, brookfield) are all quite nice.

Cool.

There are a handful of people at Loyola who made the decision between Loyola and Case in some manner. Myself being among them, I think the comparison is relatively quite simple and your decision should be based on what you want to do with your career. Case is a research powerhouse and if that's what you're looking for, you'd be far better served going there. Loyola's strengths lie in it's attention to medical ethics, social issues, and service to the poor and if those reflect your interests, you'd be an excellent fit here. That being said, you can do exciting research at Loyola and you can do beneficial volunteer work at Case... the difference just lies in the emphasis.

Because I'm a Loyola student, I'll just throw in that I love this place. I'm going to be doing some really cool research in the cardiovascular institute this summer as half our class is going overseas to do medical volunteer work. Any opportunity you are looking for is here. The location of the hospital is a very poor, very challenged part of Chicagoland, which allows us to serve those who need health care the most as well as see some of the most interesting pathology. At the same time, nearby are several neighborhoods like Riverside and Oak Park that are quite affluent and have some really cool places to eat, drink, and hang out. That's where most medical students live. I highly encourage you to come here, it's a really cool place. Let us know if you have other question!

Go to Case, no question
