Loyola Waitlist

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The waitling list, or "alternate list" as they call it, does not really move until early May. The Dean usually CALLS you and asks where you have been accepted and if you're still interested in their school...you decide right there and then.😛

This is nice, since it is quicker and it allows the list to move fast...something like 30-40 students were taken off the alternate list last year I was told too. Keep the hope, it will happen.

Thanks LabRat! Do you think a letter of intent would help?

A letter of intent might make a big difference as long as you spell out "if taken off the waitlist I will definitely attend", etc. I think that the committee meets over and over to pick alternate applicants so new info to go along with the letter of intent would help. If you're in school include a new/revised transcript, if not try a new letter of recommendation from a new activity, or an abstract for a research project if you do research. Good luck.🙂

i think it is lame that they won't give you an idea of where you are on the waiting list. you could be at the very bottom of the list and they won't tell you, so you might have your hopes up that you'd get pulled even though there is no chance!
was anyone else disappointed that they didn't give a presentation on the school, curriculum, student life, etc...? i went away from the day with a really fuzzy idea of what it would be like to go to med school there. the facilities were amazing, but it seemed like the tour was the only effort they made to sell the school.

So a lot of my questions were answered by him. The grading system is the only thing I didn't like: Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail, uhm, hello it's A,B,C,F with different names...so i saw some chilling laid back students and really overstudying type A students. I was told the faculty is great there and that you choose what kind of student you will be. Obssessive over the Honors/High Pass or just Pass.

I don't think they care about seeling themselves since they want only people who want to go there. The other thing was you need a car😕 which sucks for out of state people who are all alone there😡

but how do you really know if you want to go there unless they present the school to you? i mean, sure, you can read their brochure/website, but i felt like i had sooooo many questions that weren't answered in the brochure. i just found it irritating that they didn't present the school to us since every other school i've interviewed at gave us a talk about *something*. perhaps i felt so lost about the school, because the students were on spring break when i visited!

So who gave you the your if the students were gone?

I am glad I had a chance to stay with a host and I recommend people do it all the time...they can answer those more sincere questions and are usually very nice.

I guess i would of wanted more info on the summer research opportunities there; the housing info doesn't really matter until you get in since loyola has no on-campus housing. the curriculum we were told some stuff by our tour guides and i asked my host about the rest (the website is good for the loyola curriculum too).

when was your interview lola? it must of felt weird with no one there...🙁

a student gave us a tour, which was great. he was able to answer most of my questions, but that was after i had the interviews asking me why loyola. i mean, i could answer why to some extent, but i was still pretty unsure of the class hours, % of time spent in pbl, etc... during the interview part oh well. the interviews didn't go too well there. no biggie i guess.

i interviewed there last week (for the waitlist). there were only 3 of us which was really strange to me. i guess it just sort of threw me off a bit b/c it was structured so differently from other interviews i've had. i was not prepared to begin answering questions about our health care system and why loyola at 9am. oh well!

it's just a bit disappointing b/c i think i would have liked the school a lot had the day gone a little differently.

But think that Loyola only interviews about 5% of those who apply, so you made a BIG cut. Also, they eventually take 50-60% of those who interview (waitist included) so those are some good numbers and odds.

You never know with interviews, they obviously saw something special in your application, so don't be too hard on yourself. I'm waitlisted here and I liked it more than i thought I would. Good luck.😀

When I interviewed in Jan. the dean told me that 25% (about 40 students) of those who MATRICULATED were from the alternate list and that a much larger percent are accepted, she said roughly 50% (one can only hope this is a correct estimate). If this is true there is even greater hope!

Lola,

I recently shadowed a student at Loyola... I also got to speak to a bunch of students on my interview day, so if you have any questions about (my) opinion, feel free to pm me (I can give you my aim screenname). Also look for a long post of mine that I put on the thread titled something like "Illinois styles." It's this if the link works: http://www.studentdoctor.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59245&highlight=illinois+styles

Now, I got the feeling you did about Loyola about Rush. However, it's much easier for me to revisit since I live in Chicago. I'm going back there in April to shadow a student since they are in midterms and break now.

Best of luck.

Probably no one has heard anything about the waitlist yet, but... bump.

does anyone have any idea of how many people are on the waitlist? they would not tell me at my interview how many people they reject post-ineterview! i'm wondering if they waitlist everyone.

When I was there, Dean Norstrom said that they rank the waitlist at the end of April when all of the interviews are completed. They only accept as many applicants as there are slots (half of which are reserved for in-state applicants), so the wait list generally starts moving right away in May when people first start making their final decisions. Almost everyone who interviews there is either accepted or waitlisted. There numbers for the last two years indicated that 500-600 were interview and about 300 were offered acceptances. Since there were 130 slots in the class, that means that about 170 are pulled from the waitlist (~60%). The numbers are a bit deceiving because they have two separate pools (in-state and out-of-state). They are also expanding their class next year, so there will be 140 slots. Hope that helps.

From what I remember my premed advisor telling me, not only is Loyola's waitlist divided into instate/out of state, but I think they also go male/female. So if a female in-stater withdraws (like me, if I decline my spot, which may happen), they'll take another female in-stater off the waitlist.
