Hey guys. I'm considering going to Loyola. I'm curious to know the dirt on this school. Notwithstanding research, how does Loyola compare with Northwestern, for instance? I know the students are happy and the faculty is very nice, but how happy are the students after they graduate. How prepared are they for the 'real world' of medicine (ie, residency, usmle)?

Thanks! Your input will be greatly appreciated.

All I can say is that I go to Northwestern, and I'm happy.

Also, I think Loyola is a Jesuit school, don't know how much that plays into their curriculum, but just a thing to keep in mind.

Here's my Illinois school ranking:

Northwestern
U of C
Loyola, Rush
UIC

If you get into both NU and LU, definitely take NU. That's a no-brainer.

As far as Loyola goes, it has an excellent reputation and the graduates come out with outstanding clinical skills. From the very first day the students are exposed to clinical situations and hands on care. They are assigned mentors and advisors in all different fields and take responsibility for patient care very early. The alumni are very involved with the school and continue to express how happy they are that they made the decision to come to Loyola.

If you have the luxury of choice, go with the best fit. People choose Loyola over NU and vice versa depending on personal criteria. Going where you feel you will be happy and successful is the "no brainer."

I think it all comes down to where you feel you'll fit in the most. NU does have a better "reputation" as a more academic institute, however, as a Loyola student myself, I love Loyola's program. In talking to fourth years who have done away rotations, they tell me that the loyola students are the most prepared and confident out of any other students they've encountered. Loyola doesn't care as much about its "academic prestige", but cares more about graduating competent well rounded physcians. One of my good friends from high school goes to NU and likes it, but wants to do his residency at Loyola if that tells you anything. You're going to be at one of these schools for at least four years, so go to the place that agrees with who you are and who you want to become.
