Hi,

I am a second year dental student from Toronto and am interested in both of the externship programs associated with LSU. This summer I'll be externing at Emory and Jackson Memorial and am hoping to apply to the LSU programs for next summer.

I had a few questions that I hope some people who are familiar with the LSU programs could help me with.

Firstly, do they accept Canadians/Non-U.S citizens to the externship program.

Secondly, how does it work if my school does not provide a class rank? I have my transcripts and will have NBDE scores but my school does not give a rank for reasons unknown to me.

Thirdly, can someone help me out with the contact for LSU-Shreveport to get the extern application...I can't seem to find it.

Thank you in advance for all of the help, I really appreciate it.

P.S. If I were you I would take Emory off your list and put LSU in its place. I have been to all 3.[/QUOTE]

Thank you for the contact info. If I may ask, why would you take Emory off the list?

I have heard that the LSU's and Parkland give the most hands on experience. I will be applying for those after my third year. I am only finished my second year and at my dental school we dont start shucking till January of 3rd year....brutal I know. So for me, Emory will be great. Do you recommend any other externships that may good to go to? Thanks again.

Hey,

I recently went to Parkland for an OMFS externship, it was an AWESOME experience. I saw soooo much stuff and got to pull as many teeth as I wanted. I also scrubbed-in in a lot of cases and saw some amazing stuff. It really gave me a good representation of the 6 year OMFS program. All the residents were awesome and you get to interact with some of the "Big-Guns" of OMFS like Dr. Ellis.

The negative is that they do not accept Canadian applicants for the OMFS program but they do accept them for the internship. The only issue is that I think you have to be in your clinical years to do anything in Parkland, some sort of thing to do with the insurance, so perhaps consider it after your 3rd year.

Apparently Parkland is also highly looked at when you apply for any sort of graduate studies.

Anyways feel free to message me for q's

You can go to LSU-NO even if you're not in your clinical years.

Hi Tristan28, I searched Jackson memorial and noticed in this forum that you had plans to extern here. Do you mind sharing your experience?

I pulled as many teeth and spent as much time in the OR at Kentucky as I did at Shreveport and Parkland. I think this is largely due to the increased number of externs at Parkland and Shreveport. Pulling teeth and going to the OR is cool and important, but I would recommend going to at least program where they do Cancer just to get some exposure to this. Cancer is complex, time consuming and you should probably know if it is something you are interested in when choosing where to apply/interview/Rank, etc. Many people seek or avoid Cancer programs specifically. Shreveport would be great for pulling teeth and for getting Cancer exposure along with trauma and full scope.

For big Sx, I also recommend externing at University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Albeit a 4-yr program, it is very trauma and cancer heavy. Although you probably won't take a single tooth out there, you will be in the OR nearly all day every day seeing a host of cases from neck whacks to orthognathics and TMJ Sx. Scrubbing in with Dr. Carlson is a unique privilege. His knowledge/skill/dedication is paralleled by few. You can also take call every night if you want and sew up all kinds of facial lacs (no ENT or Plastics services at the hospital). You can go for 1 or 2 weeks so its not a huge time commitment away from your dental program. And I also agree with those people above who suggest Shreveport - not going to get any more broadscope than w/ Ghali.

You should PM Yah-E; he went to LSU. For a while.

LSU-NO is a busy trauma externship, my friend was there and he enjoyed everything except the neighborhood which was not quite safe

OMFS guys can provide you with more details

do not worry, many dental schools don't provide class ranking but they have to mention this in official papers
