Is lupus cerebritis a subset of neuropsychiatric lupus or are they 2 different things? Please help, I'm trying to do a PBL presentation and I can't find much out there on lupus cerebritis but neuropsychiatric lupus keeps popping up. 😕

I have zero medical knowledge from my own studies as I'm just a pre-med, but I can tell you what my rheumatologist told me. I have SLE and I get severe headaches. He sent me for an MRI to check for lupus cerebritis, which came back negative. He said the symptoms involved headaches, seizures, and stroke. Then, he said there's something else which some doctors call SLE-NP, which is just like lupus cerebritis (as far as symptoms go), but it involves severe anxiety. He said he reserves that diagnosis for SLE patients who have also been diagnosed with some kind of anxiety or panic disorder.

Like I said, I'm only basing this on what he said, not my own experience or knowledge, so take it for what it's worth. I hope it's right!

Thanks for replying. OK after way too much time searching, it's finally cleared up, in case anyone's interested. NPSLE is an umbrella term that the American College of Rheumatology (http://www.rheumatology.org/publications/ar/1999/aprilappendix.asp) came up w/ to encompass all nervous system related SLE problems and includes 19 categories:
Acute Confusional State
Cognitive Dysfunction
Myasthenia Gravis
Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy (Guillain-Barré Syndrome)
Demyelinating Syndrome
Myelopathy
Anxiety Disorder
Headache
Neuropathy, Cranial
Aseptic Meningitis
Mononeuropathy (single/multiplex)
Plexopathy
Autonomic Disorder
Mood Disorders
Polyneuropathy
Cerebrovascular Disease
Movement Disorder (Chorea)
Psychosis
Seizures and Seizure Disorders
