I was just wondering how everyone else feels about “lurkers” like LurkeratSJFC. I haven’t been a SDN member for all that long but I have read numerous threads and I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone admit to being a lurker. That being said, I highly doubt he/she is the only one out there. The first PM I ever received I was wary about whether or not it was a so-called lurker. I think it’s great for students to anonymously communicate with adcoms but at the same time I feel like it takes away the best part of SDN. It’s a place for students or past students, hence the name, and not a place to be judged. For example, I bet the students applying to SJFC aren’t going to be saying anything bad about the school with a known lurker out there. I know everything is supposed to be anonymous but if you’ve posted a lot and someone were to look at all your previous posts then it isn’t that hard to at least get an idea of whom you may be. So, it’s almost as if you have to be careful about what you say. Why couldn’t adcoms do that and use that for or against you in the admissions process? I’m not implying that this is what they do but just throwing that idea out there. Maybe some schools do it to see what about the program students like and what they dislike but can’t they figure that out by talking to current students? Anyways, just wondering what people think…

well i'm new here and i don't know all of the details of an adcom's job but it would seem they have more important things to do. surfing or lurking on a "student" website trying to match up anonymous id's with a student's application seems trivial. who in the world would have time to do this with the demands of a 40 hour workweek and other job duties. i don't know. i'm not saying it's not possible but sometimes it seems silly that a professional would go out of their way to eliminate candidates by responses on a virtual website??? just speaking off the top of my head 😉

Colleges have dropped messages on these boards before; however, a name like Lurker does raise suspicion.

SDN is an open-access public forum.
Anyone can join, from the President of a University or Dean of a COP right on down to student in middle school.

You DO need to be careful about what you post on SDN or any other place on the internet, since it can be viewed by ANYONE. This includes Facebook, Myspace, YahooGroups, whatever.

If you are worried about being identified, don't post any personally identifiable information.

After a little thought, I'm going to close this thread because it seems to be directed at a particular individual.

Anyone is welcome to join SDN and that includes AdComm members.
Everyone on here should know that what they are posting may be read by people in a position to evaluate them: admissions committee members, professors, potential employers, etc.

Conduct yourself accordingly.

And please don't create threads directed at specific members of our community. 🙂
