Lurkers

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I lurked here for a long time and finally grew the cojones to post. Now I'm addicted.

Maybe that's the problem. High addiction rate. Nancy Reagan. Just say "no".

Hi

After lurking for several months, I never thought that you would invite 400 threads that basically consisted of "Hi, I'm super excited about anesthesia. What do you guys do all day and will that B in high school bio keep me from matching"

Many lurkers are just in sponge mode, soaking up the good info until we have something relevant to contribute. Since I'm applying this year, I'll probably post each time my anxiety reaches pre-allo levels and I need some catharsis or when I have more to say clinically than, "Hey I saw someone use propofol today. What do you think about that?"

Come on Lurkers, Say it LOUD and PROUD. Say it with me now, "WE KNOW S H#^, WE haven't learned S H#^, and probably won't know S H#^ for quite some time!!!"

What a relief! It is out, I'm now out😱 Millions have now been OUTED😱😱

Well,... I guess I have learned one thing today. It's a good day!

As mentioned by another poster or two, some of us who lurk are still in the information absorption mode. I'm starting med school soon and am definitely interested in anesthesia, but it'll be several years before I think I'll be in the position to ask questions of the residents and attendings on the forum. Any newbie questions I've come up with so far have been answered in the FAQ sections and other stickies.

So, for the time being I'll just continue lurking in the background and learning more. 🙂

Hi.... from a MS3 who has been really interested in anesthesia and has been lurking here for a while 🙂

why NOT post? Well, half the time responses are a "did you search this forum, idiot? There are at least 10,000 posts on the subject"

I find the forum informative and entertaining though. I've had a couple of good replies to my posts.

hi!

from your pharmacist. i like reading what you guys do with your drugs.😀 i've learned a ton!

Hi! I don't post because I don't have any witty quips to add to these scholarly discussions. You guys remind me of the male residents at my program...it's like I'm back in high school! Guess it keeps things interesting when you're sitting around all day listening to your ipod. Can't wait to join you!

i hope you guys are still around when i start residency. i've been lurking for a while, and not a day goes by that i don't check this forum (mostly only this anesthesia forum). to all the attendings, residents, and contributors -- please don't change a thing.

Welcome to the friendlier, new and improved anesthesiology forum. We are all very nice here, always. Well...almost always. Well, most of the time. Okay, sometimes.🙂

Me= just a curious, clueless pre-med.

See you guys again in a few years (hopefully)...
*scurries away*

lurking = entertaining way to learn without actually studying. probably will continue to do so until i have something insightful to say (not much to offer as MS4).

x-MMD did the mods put you up to this after all of the "crying" or is this on your own volition?

Another lurker here. I love reading this board and do so almost everyday.

Quick question: I only honored 60% of my first year classes and got a high pass on the rest. Does this mean I have to score a 250+ on Step 1 to match? I'm worried because I know someone who knows someone who said this was true.

:meanie::meanie::meanie:

I've been lurking on the Anesthesiology forum since my premed years and I'm starting med school this week.

For the past 3+ years this has been my favorite specialty forum for seeing how professionals deal with each other in the real world. I think the personalities of the regulars (residents and admins) are honest and offer a very valuable no-bs view of medicine. I don't have much to add so I almost never post here but I still think I'm better off for reading this forum.

JET, Noy, Mil, UTSW (is he back?), plankton, - don't change this forum! 👍 I appreciate the dedication you've shown for sharing your perspective on SDN.

nah...it's all me:laugh:

Why don't you guys ever post up?

At least just to say hi.....
Do I still count as a lurker now that I've been posting for all of, what, one week? 😀

As others have said, I don't feel like I have much to contribute to the clinical conversation at this point as an MS3. I'm interested in research, not private practice, so I can't say much on those threads either. And I'm a girl, so I don't go for guns, fast cars, booze, or hot women (not that there's anything wrong with that!)

I'm not a lurker, but say no to Obama anyway, y'all.

i second that.

hi, MS4 here.

At least just to say hi.....

So I too have been a long time lurker and seldom poster, but I'm going to try and change that. I just started my CA-1 year and will hopefully continue to learn from some of the veterans here, as well as, ask a newbie question or two.

word up!

Been lurkin for a couple of years now.
Im a senior med student who recently underwent an epiphany where I realized anesthesiology was what I have been looking for as a career.

Had been gunning for radiology but decided I wasn't a vampire. No offense to any radiologists out there.

You guys definitely have the best forum on SDN. No doubt about it!

Yo.

just trying to get through PGY-1. I'll have more to contribute next year once this misery ends. In the meantime, I love love love reading this board. It keeps me going through all the BS and gives me a goal to reach for. Can't wait to join in with foolish questions next year once I get off of the wards and into the OR.

Again,
Thanks.
Y'all were a great resource while in med school/applying/the match. Rock on. You keep hope alive.

I read some between work...anyone at Shands?...I read so I get the feel for Anesthesia in general and how an AA might fit in elsewhere...anywhere but in the state of Florida. Probably less now that the football season is starting...looking forward to LSU vs UF

Ii was just blown away that Q was lurking on the gas forum. She was the mainstay of the MCAT forum back in my pre-med days. MMD, Hi. I'll go back to watching you and Plank fight now. 😀

so if plank vs mil were amateur boxing, and you were scoring our fights....

where do we stand right now?

Jet walks in the room, an unlit Marlboro Red hanging off the side of his mouth, Miami Hurricane ballcap on backwards.

"BETS!!! WHO WANTS A PIECE OF THIS?"

"TAKIN BETS!!!!"

"Bookies in Vegas are calling it MIL three to one."

"Yep, heres a twenty," Jet says to a better as he takes a bet and changes the rest.

Why? I realize that I have a rep as a professional student and all, but it has to end some time! You didn't expect me to just stay in med school for the rest of my life and never pick a specialty, did you??? I've been doing anesthesiology research since I was in grad school, and I've continued on with it in med school. I'm planning to do a post doc before residency, probably next year. So I'll be applying a year late for the match (with the c/o 2011). But I will be applying. 🙂

BTW, Jet, fellow Floridian here. 😎

Cool. I went to New College just south of your old stomping grounds, so I am very familiar with Bradenton and Tampa. NC was part of USF at the time (mid 1990s), so technically I am a USF alum too. 🙂 A few years ago they split up, and USF Sarasota moved away to its own campus. When USF left, they and NC actually split up all the books in the Sarasota campus library. I read about this in the alumni newsletter, and laughed my derriere off, because that library was never much to boast about. (Hence why I made so many trips up to Tampa. )

Oh, crap. Can you please not apply to any California programs? The last time we faced off it didn't work out so well for me 😉
Oh come on, we both know that's not true! I seem to remember a certain someone getting a dozen invites all over the place and then getting into one of his top choice schools in the end. So your woe is me line is not going to fly with me, Doctor. :meanie: That, and I don't think we had any overlap in the schools we applied to, which is a minor detail. Regardless, you don't have to worry. I will definitely not be doing my residency in CA. My folks are still in FL, and I want to be in the South somewhere. I realize that this is hard for a Californian to believe, but we do have plenty of perfectly good academic medical centers east of the Mississippi and south of Baltimore, you know. 😉

That's mostly true. But there was that one woman that interviewed both of us at UMich, right?

As for California, I got beaten up pretty bad the last time I tried to say anything for my home state here in this forum, so I won't do it again. Besides, I might be so used to Virginia in a few years that I won't want to leave...

We had the same interviewer? Really? I don't remember this. 😳 Are you talking about the woman who was all upset because she didn't get a chance to ask me about what I do for fun since I took the whole half an hour to tell her about myself? That's the only interviewer I remember from U Mich.

CA is nice to visit, but for somewhere to live, I'd take VA over CA any day. Especially if you are planning to have kids at some point. If you apply to VA residencies, we will probably cross paths. 😎

Yeah, she had done a PhD in virology but hadn't finished her thesis yet...I think she'd done some electron microscopy (old fashioned EM, not the cool 3-d stuff I did 🙂). She had an EM pic on her business card.

I'm scared of having kids. I want to have some time alone with my money as an attending first. I don't think my wife's eggs will keep that long though.

If you ever do find yourself in the VA area, you should definitely let me know!

I think it's funny that all of jetproppilot's posts include:
