I wanted to know how many people have lied in an interview. I keep getting the question "what is your top three schools" I tell them the truth and if their school is not in the top three I tell them why! But I have talked to a few others that have said that they tell every school they go to thats its their top choice-whats up with that- Do you think the ADCOMS know? I wont start lying about my top choices I just wanted to see some responses

Each of the schools that I have interviews for have unique qualities that make them high on my list. I didn't apply to any schools that I wouldn't want to go to. With a generic question, such as "are we in your top three" is not a good question, so doesn't warrant a good answer. I can come up with at least one quality that would make each school I applied to very desireable for me to attend, and that is what I would focus on when answering the question. Just like schools can't rank themselves, how can be rank them, especially when we have no idea which ones we will even get offers to. But definitely, no lying.

I feel the same way, But I hope it does not hurt my chances. Because so far their is not a school that I would not love to go to.

When you want to simply gain entrance to dental school regardless of where then in a way, each and every school becomes your top choice. Personally, I don't know if it's very tactful to tell an interviewer during your interview that they aren't even one of your top three be it a lie or not.

Interesting though. I haven't been asked that question in any of my interviews, but I did go out of my way at my favorite school to specifically state that they were indeed my number one choice.

I think that when schools ask for your "top three", they assume that you will include their school regardless. They are more interested in the other two schools you mention.

One of my interviewers notoriously asks if School X is your number one choice. I didn't really feel comfortable about lying so I was worried, but luckily when he heard that this was my first interview, he said he wouldn't ask because he didn't expect me to know yet.

However, he went on to say that, if an interviewee tells him it is not their 1st choice, he isn't going to make them his first choice. The reason being that if they give said student an offer, lets say the student is decent and declines within a month. In that month, they lost out on a student (most likely of equal caliber) whose 1st choice WAS School X, but since they didn't get an offer from School X, they instead accepted an offer at School Y.

Makes sense. Why waste an acceptance on someone that most likely won't go there? Some applicants don't ever officially decline, and that wastes a lot of time for the school, and then the students they want are already taken. So if you tell them flat-out that they aren't on the top of your list, they might return the favor when Dec 1st comes around. Just something to think about.

I was told I was a leading candidate for a spot and if it was my number one choice that I would receive a letter Dec. 1. I had to tell them the truth that it was one of my top choices but since I had not yet seen the facilities I could not give a definite yes. The interviewer seemed okay with my answer, but at the end of the interview he informed me that if I ended up deciding it was my number 1 choice I should give him a personal phone call before Dec. 1st. I have not made the phone call and am still unsure as to my decision. What an awkward situation!

I think those that lie have that attitude that makes a terrible dentist-I will say anthing so I can get where I want to be. I think ADCOMS should be careful with these individuals that will do anything and say anything to get where they want to be. Where are the ethics?

Yeah, I'm supposed to call my interviewer after I see my other schools and let him know. It's hard because it's definitely in the top 2, just not sure if it is 1st.

welcome to the real world. At every interview you need to sell it! Regardless. You are the stupidest person ever if you say at an interview that "this school is my back up school, if my 5 real schools don't accept me I will go here"

Sell it hard that you would do anything to get in to any school you are interviewing at. It is not lying, if you flew there to interview you better be willing to go there! You may not have a choice.

Fake it til you make it, this is your superbowl. Etc.

Dr. Powell knows who you are, you aren't getting in becuase of it. Smooth. jk

How was the RDEP interview with Dr. Ayers? Don't worry Dr. Powell says that to everyone.

Luckily, of the three interviews so far, only one has asked me this question and it actually was my top school, so that made it pretty easy to tell the truth.

If the situation arises I would be honest. And truth is, I want to be a dentist really bad! All the schools I have interviewed at have amazing things that would all be reasons as to why I would go there. In one way or another, I could see myself at any of the schools I have interviewed at thus far, and be extremely happy. I however, have not been asked that question yet. For me, it's like I like such and such school for this reason, and a different school for a different reason, and there's really no need to start comparing and ranking schools (whether it be top choice, top 3, top 5, etc.) because a "top choice" may or may not accept you. So, until I have a decision to make, (and I hope I do), that is when I will start ranking schools. But in an interview, I would not lie and I would do whatever I could to sell myself to that school.

Yeah, very akward indeed. I mean geeze...what a difficult decision. To call or not to call and get the letter. What if you decide later that you don't want to go there after all? Then I guess there would be absolutely no reason to call right now and practically reserve yourself a spot in the meantime. Such tough decisions we are faced with.

Hey, thanks for your response. I assume you have also had your interview with Dr. Powell. If this is a common question from him, how did you answer that question? It was difficult for me because I wanted to remain honest, but at this point I can't say I am 100% sold on Creighton, but it is very high on my list. I have 13 total interviews and have only gone to a handful of them, and thus can't say I would go there for sure if I am accepted there. However, due to the program they have with Utah students, it is VERY high on my current list.

By the way-other than the aforementioned part of the interview, the interview was awesome!

I sold it hard, it is the friggin' RDEP! Even if you have never seen omaha, you have to just sell yourself to them.

Until you get in, EVERY school is your TOP choice. Trust me, the last thing a school wants to hear is that there not your top choice. Schools want students who want to go to there school more than anything.

Hmmm, lessons learned I guess. Maybe I gave up my spot at Creighton, that question just threw me for a loop. I guess I am fortunate enough to answer that question better in future interviews. I guess I should have answered the question more like you. Congrats-you will most likely be accepted by them!

Sometimes I wonder how stupid people can be and they still get into dental/medical school, oh well I guess that is our world anymore, and it will be easier for me to be in the top 15% of my class!

This is the first year that Dr. Ayers is formally interviewing with candidates-it is still a "chat" but this year it is by invitation only. So only 65 out of 250 applicants were interviewed from Utah.

You still only have a chat with Dr. Powell, and the chat is going on during a little tour of the school and he walks you out. Dr Powell is the director of the RDEP program-he is not from Crieghton.

And like DDDSMACK said he says the same thing to everybody.

I thought that I had a top three but with each interview I go to the decisions get harder and harder. Every school has something great to offer and every school has a down fall. If the school is awesome in all regards academically then it is probably way expensive. If a school is in a trashy area then the clinics are going to be superb. You get what I am saying. I just hope to get into one of the schools that I applied to and I will be very satisfied.

I figure the only way to consider what are your top schools, you would have to start off with the schools you have interviews at. You dont want to say my number 1 choice is school Z, if you dont even have a interview with them yet. They wouldnt even be in the picture. How do you know that when you get home from the interview at school X you get the rejection from school Z.

your chances seem to be about 1 in 6.5. so that is encouraging, I was always thinking it was like 1/50.

Personally (and I hate to say this with possible admissions peeps lurking), but I didn't think the facilities at Creighton were all that great.

Although, don't we get our own dental assistants at Creighton? Also...since their are no people that are in specialty programs you get to work on all sorts of great cases.

Damn, I want to be RDEP. I moved to the wrong state.
