Hey guys,
So apparently my friends tell that that no one will hire you for the summer (especially hospitals) before or after your first year of medical school knowing you are going to med school and really just looking for summer work. I applied to two jobs and already realized that, but doesn't anyone find it innately wrong to lie and say you will work full-time? It is a horrible system that med students who could use the money more than most, can't get it; and, moreover, that places are turning down overly competent and motivated help.

My friend has applied stating he plans to work full-time and then says he will just quit in August, so do you guys feel this is okay and will have no long-term ramifications (especially if you want to apply to that hospital down the road for residency)?

Thanks for your input.

Work for a temp agency... that's what I plan on doing.

Med students need the money more than most? Sorry, I just found that statement a bit...naive.

Doesn't it make sense to you from the employer's point of view? It makes sense to me. There are jobs available for the summer, though. Look into summer reseach fellowships designed for med students, some of which have a fairly nice stipend, tutoring, teaching summer courses, etc. And temp work is a good option, too.

It's also really hard for pre-meds to find 1 year jobs. People search for months for jobs. I don't know, in a way it seems from your post as if you think you deserve a job just because you're a med student. I'm sorry if I'm misreading you. But jobs are really not easy to come by for anybody. Short-term employment is especially difficult because it doesn't make much sense from the point of view of the employers, who know they'll have to find somebody to replace you after only a few months. Not to mention learning curves generally associated with all jobs -- often you aren't really comfortable doing the work for a few months.

I've lied for a summer job before. Very rarely will you find someone who will hire you for just 2-3 months (unless you find one of the rare "good" jobs out there). I needed to make money somehow to make insurance/ car payments. It's no big deal.

I plan on lying. It's either that or get evicted for not being able to pay rent. I think I'd get hungry too. 🙂

firstly, i think there are a lot more people harder off than med students.. but anyways....

yes, it is very hard to get jobs just for the summer. are you a med student? if you are then i would say talk to your med school (counseling office, etC) and ask them for places to work in the hospitals. my schools have a ton of summer opportunities.

find a job at a campground, hotel, or other touristy type thing... they often hire summer employees, at least up here in the Northeast...

ohhh... another idea. Work for National Youth Leadership Forum, maybe they have things at your school or you can go somewhere to work. I met a (now) 2nd year from Tulane who was working with the NYLF in Boston for the summer...
