Is there any reference that has a basic approach to looking at lymph nodes? It seems so hard to know where to start and what to look for.

For a very basic approach try Differential Diagnosis in Surgical Pathology by Haber. It is simple but a very good place to start.

yeah awesome book, MAYBE takes about 2-3 days to read both volumes. Very easy.

Still, for straight up nodes I think Ioachim is the best.

Thanks everyone! I couldn't find the Ioachim at the hospital in which I'm currently rotating, but the new Kjeldsburg was very helpful and easy to read.

To answer my own question in hindsight, just in case anyone has the same question in the future...

There is a great diagnostic algorithm for how to approach abnormal lymph nodes in the beginning of the lymph node section in Differential Diagnosis in Surgical Pathology. VERY HELPFUL...

Nathwani's chapter in the Knowles text can be very helpful in developing a solid differential that will impress your attending. The patterns-based approach provides a good framework/method for newbs (like me) as well as the more experienced.
