Hi all. I start classes at USMD P/F In-House exam this Monday. I'd love to hear some thoughts on my proposed study plan for M1 year through step.

1. Watching BnB videos for associated in-house lecture topics for the day. (taking notes)
2. Watching in-house lecture at 2x speed to match understanding (not taking notes on the minor details that might show up on in-house exams)
3. Doing practice questions on BnB for associated topics from the day.
4. Unsuspending Anki cards from BnB videos and doing them.
--
5. Then in final week before exam, I was thinking about doing AMBOSS practice Q's of that unit
6. Going back and watching in-house lectures 2x speed also about a week before exam to add in those minor details into my learning for the exam.
--
How does this look? All feedback is appreciated.

A few questions: where does Pathoma and sketchy come into all of this? I know they're good at certain things like Pharm and micro. Should be I doing it alongside BnB or replace it during those pharm/micro lectures?

Thanks.

I don’t think I ever rewatched a lecture during preclinical unless the lecturer had a super vague PowerPoint. It might be more trouble than it’s worth to do that. Review the ppts if you feel weak in something.

There is some overlap with pathoma and BnB. For a given lecture it might be more worthwhile to watch one or the other, it just depends on the content of the lecture.

Sketchy is good for any bugs and drugs. Keep in mind, with in house exams, you’ll need to pay special attention to the details they want you to know. Often during preclinical at my school our faculty would test on certain details that either didn’t come up in sketchy or were super minute details that aren’t HY for boards.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Ah, I see. So then would you recommend I study those minute details from the lectures on the day I get them, or sort of learn more big picture things to begin, and then go back and learn those small things leading up to the exam? Because I feel like I would just end up forgetting them even if I learned them through the lectures because they won't be on the third-party or Anki. Thanks for your help.

Those details are good for making HY notes to review before exams or for making flashcards (Anki).

I never looked back at notes I took, but I was religious about Anki. So I would just make flash cards on important class topics.

Experiment and find what works best for you. The key is efficiency though. Going through lectures (watching them) probably won’t be efficient use of time with the level of material coming your way.

Do you recommend watching or attending the lectures at all? Just went through my first month of medical school, and I realize that it takes me longer to grasp concepts compared to peers, which slows me down considerably.

Personally, I zoned out the couple times I went to class. The benefit of watching recordings is watching them at your pace, rewinding, pausing, etc. Since you just started you have the opportunity to change your study habits until you find something that clicks. Also, try reaching out to your academic support at your school if you are struggling with studying should changing your study method not be beneficial. I imagine there are people at your school that could help you work through the kinks in your routine.

I would skip the re-listening lectures. I would incorporate writing / making some of your own notes from class and practice questions over doing anki. I personally do not like anki. I prefer hand-writing important notes and reviewing them.
