Hey y'all, happy holidays! Was jw if anyone here has any recommendations for any unique things to do over the summer to stand out for residency apps (am currently interested in IM but am open to any field really). thanks!

Chill doing whatever makes you happy make some money if you can and travel, unless you want top tier university IM or surgical subs which in that case I would set up some research opportunities

Might not be the answer you're looking for but I did IM and in my summer off I went out to Hollywood, stayed in a small ****ty house in west Hollywood that was actually next door to Chad Lindberg, learned to surf, walked dogs on the side for cash, and just had a blast there.

I talked about it during my interviews for residency and everyone loved it that I did something fun. IM is not that competitive unless you want to go to a top residency.

You have the rest of your life.

Research.

Publish something.

I'm an M1 trying to figure out what I want to do for the summer. I took a couple years off before starting school and have already been published (6 times with one first-author). I really like research and the opportunity to go back to my old lab (at the NIH) in the summer is available to me but so is doing research at my med school. The only difference I can see is that if I go back to my old lab I wouldn't have to deal with training and learning everything all over again and I could jump right in, but the med school research position would be more clinically oriented. Any thoughts? I've also talked to people who've told me to not worry about anything and that I'll be fine but neurotic personality is finding that hard to believe. Any help would be welcome!

Honestly, I think the point you bring up about not needing to be trained on anything by going back to your old lab is a major consideration. As you know, you can only do so much in a summer, so if you have the opportunity to hit the ground running and it's relevant to a field you think you're interested in, I'd go with that opportunity. Seems like you're much more likely to be productive there.

Isn’t it important to have a breadth of experience? You could try clinical research which generally won’t have as much training as a wet lab.

Depends on your goals. If you're trying to figure out if you like research/what kind of research you like, then sure trying different things is helpful. If you're pretty sure you want to stay in academics and/or have research be a big part of your career--or if you're gearing up for an application to a particularly competitive specialty--then really all that matters is the number of publications/presentations you get. That's the stuff that lasts on your CV going forward.

With the caveat that the above only applies when you imagine you would enjoy both experiences equally.

Your right. I made the false assumption that OP doesn’t know for sure what they want to go into.

Has anyone done something interesting besides research the summer after MS1? Most students at my school stay here for the summer and do research, because our school basically guarantees funding for it. And the general wisdom here is that you should do research over the summer. But I'm realizing now that my campus is a super academic bubble where everyone is an overachiever and that while of course doing research is a great idea, unless you're interested in going into a v academic or competitive field that it may not be necessary.

this is probably the last free summer of my life before I have kids or am old so I want to spend it well! Plz share if you did anything interesting (travel, worked somewhere random, did a volunteer trip, idk)

I like the sound of getting a summer job, but when I run the numbers of how much I'll be making in a few years...it seems pointless.

I am applying for a fellowship that gives me money to find a mentor. If I don't get that fellowship, I'll probably just travel.

The hard part is deciding where to go...
