Hey guys,

Starting M3 year next week. I was recommended by one of our advisors that the books "Case files" and "Step up to Medicine" are recommended books. I was wondering if these books are generally purchased in text and annotated like FA from the preclinical years, or would purchasing them as an Ebook be good enough?

Any input would be appreciated.

It’s however you want to use them. If you’re a writer, get paper book; otherwise just get the Ebook. I used a mix depending on what was cheaper or a friend had.

I personally liked the Pretest books for IM and EM as they have really good explanations and I got a lot of pimp questions right from them. De Virgilio is great for surgery pimp questions too.

Thanks for the tip. I have another question actually: Do people generally read Step-Up to Medicine only during the IM rotation, or do they read it throughout M3 year in addition to whatever resources they use for their rotation.

No problem!

Throughout the year or just during dedicated to brush up on stuff. I don't personally know anyone who read it only during IM; if you really wanted to hit studying hard during IM, I'd recommend UWorld over anything else (I think it's about 1500 questions for IM specifically).

Case Files can be easily done as eBooks imo. You're basically using them as a way to test your clinical knowledge. SU2M is a more comprehensive book that should probably be used more like FA. Personally, I wasn't a fan of Step Up and wouldn't recommend it, but it can be good for IM. Imo, you're better off finding a solid textbook for each rotation and supplementing the reading from that with Case Files and UWorld.

I would recommend Uworld and Zanki (free step 2 ck deck) as your main study sources during M3. I recommend these because I used them for every rotation, and supplemented with FA for psychiatry during psych, and De virgilio’s during surgery.

E-book vs hardcopy is up to you.

Thanks for the input. I'm checking out Dorian's deck right now. Do you happen to have any input or experience with it?

Any word on Emergency Medicine decks? Does Zanki doesn't seem to have EM and I'm curious how to approach the EM rotation without EM set of UW questions nor a EM subdeck of Zanki

Not sure what Dorian’s deck is.

EM is not on step 2 CK so zanki doesn’t cover it. Our school does not have EM as part of third year curriculum, but i’m sure there are good resources out there. Perhaps ask some folks doing EM for residency.

Was this adequate for pimp questions/knowledge on rotations NOT just being a shelf juggernaut?

Good question.

For most rotations, it was definitely adequate for me. For surgery, it was not. For surgery I had to pre-read specific things for their pimp questions.
Thanks. I'm having a lot of trouble discerning that from all the posts about MS3 as it's all seemingly tailored to the shelf exams. It's my only fear of going full steam ahead on the UW+Anki train again.
