Hello everyone! I've been accepted to the Chicago School of Professional Psychology's masters in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis on ABA. I understand the criticisms of the professional school route and I'm exploring as to whether or not I should go here or wait a year and go elsewhere. My question for you all today is how would having a masters from a professional school like CSOPP affect the way future university based PHD programs will view me? If I do really well will that be taken into account the same way someone doing really well in a university based program would? Or could it be viewed as a cop out? My undergrad GPA is not at a level where I could get into a PHD program at this point (3.30) I'm interested in PHD in School Psychology programs. Thank you for your time!

Generally an MA or MS can be useful if you have a lower GPA, you want more research experience, and/or you want to gain additional knowledge. I think a more research based MA/MS would serve you better than one that is applied (ex. Experimental Psychology > Counseling Psychology). As for where it is from.....I think it depends. I think a year spent as a Research Assistant would serve you just as well or better, but that is my bias.

It's possible that it might affect your application, but I wouldn't worry about that just yet. Work hard, get that high GPA, get all the research experience you can muster, get great practicum experience, do well on your GREs, & I think you'll be a great candidate. While I applied to PsyD programs, I was accepted in several wonderful programs (Denver, Spalding, Wright State) after my MA (Forensic Psych) was completed at CSOPP. Good luck! :luck:

I think what you do there would matter a lot more than where you went. I don't know how much research opportunity is available at CSPP, but my guess would be that its limited. I could be wrong though.

I don't know how low 3.30 is. I got into a fully funded phd program with a gpa only slightly above that. I'd just get a research assistant position and then apply for phd programs next year.
