I was just wondering if current students or applicants knew which schools do not allow macintosh computers. I know LECOM and West Virginia do not allow Macs because they will not work with the schools software. Does anyone else know any other schools that do not allow Mac computers?

I don't see why this should be a concern. It is all software. I personally run Windows and OS X on my Mac laptop. There are also program that allow you to run windows apps inside mac os.

Macs will work at all of the schools. They are better than PC's. End of story.

The commercials failed to convince me, but your post changed that...

OK, not really. Macs are good computers but are overpriced. I can use the extra dollars.

Just use a program like Parallels for MAC. You can run windows and OSX at the same time.

As far as them being more expensive they really aren't because you don't have to buy a new one every two years due to viruses and all that jibberish.

That's ridiculous to say, you don't have to buy a PC every two years as long as you know how to use a computer. As for viruses all you have to do is make sure you install the updates windows suggests b/c half of the viruses made target the flaw the update fixes after the update is released. So if people just installed the update the would not be vulnerable to the virus.

BTW, I used an Ibook G4 for four years (undergrad) and it was a pretty great computer with some major drawbacks, but for med school next year I'm getting a Sony Vaio SR. Especially after using Windows 7 which in my opinion is better than Mac's OS.

Mac users will always say how Macs are virus-free. First, that is not completely true. Viruses do exist for Macs as they do for Linux as well. There are less of them out there because neither OS is as ubiquitous as Windows. Windows dominates the market (>90%), so naturally people with malicious intent will create viruses in a way that could cause the most damage.

I have used PC's for many, many years. Get good anti-virus software (free ones are available) and keep it updated.

If you really want a Mac, you need to know which school you'll be attending. Although Boot Camp//Parallels//VMware Fusion will allow you to run Windows and all of its...err...glory, you may be SOL at certain schools. I've seen several that require you to bring your laptop for exams/practicals, and they must be of a certain brand/model, or else you will have no tech support during the graded exercise. So if you have a software issue, you get a 0. That could be serious business.

Other than that, I know of a school or two that won't give you the necessary software to run their wireless network unless you have a PC and/or a Dell XX that they recommended.

But at 90% of schools you wouldn't have any problems. At those schools, many of your classmates will have Macs too.

You obviously don't frequent the same sites I do 😉

Well at Touro NV I saw more Macs during the tour than PC's so I think I'm good.

Mac is better designed and better engineered. PC laptops are generally cheaper but you get what you pay for. For example, when do you see a macbook user having to use the dumb cooling pad?

If you compare apple to apple, then mac is the winner. I've been using PC for 14 years and mac for 1 month.

I was told that the class of 2014 (my class) will be required to have a school issued PC at Touro-NV. I love my mac and want to use it, so they said I might have to petition my case, but it sounds like they are pretty serious.

I figure I might try to convince them that I will use boot camp and totally run windows for the school software, but we will see as it really isn't that big of a deal to me I guess - I will just be a closet mac user at the school while using the (P)iece of (C)rap.

Anyone know if CCOM requires a PC? I'm also thinking about getting a Mac, but I don't really want to spend the money if CCOM doesnt even approve of it.

I pray that Touro NV will let me use my mac. Do you know how we petition? I was told the same thing but never heard anything else afterwards.

You honestly don't even need a computer to attend CCOM. I have a Mac and you know what they say, once you go Mac you never go back.😉

Get a Thinkpad. 😉

Interestingly enough my first laptop is a Thinkpad, state of the art Pentium 166Mhz 380ED in 97. Over the years I've used a handful other models. I like Thinkpad. My favorite is the T series. Only it'd be better if it can run snow leopard. 😉 Speaking of which, the same battery runs 4 hours on mac os and barely 2 hours on Windows 7. Go figure.

Tell them it's a PC running windows with a mac cover. 😀

For those of you who don't know all Mac OS' are based off a UNIX architecture. And guess what else is based off a UNIX architecture but is totally free- Linux. I think the time spent setting up Linux is worth not paying for Mac OS.

And even though I a use a PC more often, I have to admit that the aluminum cases that some Macs have is pretty slick.

Using a Mac instead of PC is like wearing sweat pants instead of jeans, you might think it is just a personal preference, but really everyone thinks less of you.

You've got it backwards, even if you're taking that metaphor literally.

And as a friend of mine has so eloquently expressed it...

Actually that's wrong. You can use a Mac at LECOM. I have many friends here who have Macs and have no problem with the network or software (we don't have school specific software). You just won't be able to get tech service on Macs here. I wish I would've gotten a Mac but oh well.

Macs entire marketing is based on "If you are too stupid to use PC, buy a Mac."
Yeah Macs may not stop up, but that is because the don't run anything complicated enough to stop up a calculator.
And the reason they don't have virus's is because ppl who use macs don't have anything worth ruining on their computer or enough money in the bank worth stealing. It takes time to write a virus and that person wants more satisfaction than just ruining someone's minesweeper high score.

There are plenty of places on the web for Mac vs. PC flame wars, but SDN really isn't one of them. The purpose of this thread is to help the OP with Mac usability issues with regards to DO schools. Let's try and keep this thread on topic. 🙂

I'm in a MD program, and most of us are using the 13 inch macbook pro. It's the best damn laptop on the market, and even with it's price, it's the best deal as well. I challenge anyone to build a 13 inch laptop with the following specs, for a cheaper price...

13 inch
2.3 mhz core2duo
LCD screen
4 gigs DDR3 ram
500 gig HD
5 hour battery life 🙂

If your school buys your computers for you and the ITS service is provided by the school and the school/ITS service says you can't use macs end of story...
besides some schools provide computers for their students and staff and if a new staff comes in and wants to use thier computer PC or not it will not work with the ITS setup.

I have a lenovo T series right now; best computer I've ever owned, hands down.

The new info coming out of mac rumors is that apple is coming out with a tablet sometime next year (2010)....something like a 10" screen and around $1,000. Of course, this is just a rumor but mac rumors has been pretty accurate so far!
