I'm looking at getting a new laptop soon. I've always been a pc guy, but I'm thinking of going the mac route this time. Will this be ok for opto school as well? I wasn't sure if buying a mac would be alright for opto school if you have to use specific programs etc that are pc only. Thanks

i have a mac too.. but i never considered this being a problem, is it? are their many programs opto students use? i didnt think there were.....

It's not an issue. Mac has compatible programs for everything PCs have. All you really will need is Office.

I would not recommend the mac. Windows laptops with equal specs can be had for around 50% of the mac price.

At our school, they have found work arounds to get everything working on a Mac that they need to (most specifically the EMR software we use in clinic). So you will probably be safe.

You may want to wait until you get into school before buying a laptop. I'm glad I did because my school required everyone to buy a laptop through them. There was no getting around it. They offered a Dell and a Mac. I selected the Mac and haven't had any problems so far.

what type of programs do optometry student use specific to optometry?Whats the EMR software?

EMR = electronic medical records

PUCO also uses Compulink.

SCO uses Compulink as well. Quite possibly the most frustrating software ever invented 👎

Thank you for your input. 🙄

Thanks guys!

BTW, what school would REQUIRE you to buy a laptop THROUGH them? That sounds very stupid

I don't know how legal it is either. They can't require you to buy books through them either. I know there are supposedly 2 schools whos book prices are built into tuition costs. I also know one OD who was previously an attourny who is bringing up a case against the school. I think she is doing it for her own entertainment though.

Midwestern university requires all Dental and Optometry students to purchase a laptop through the school. You have a choice between two models. The price of the laptop was built into your tuition. Their explanation was that it would ensure that each student had a computer that could handle the software that was to be loaded onto the computer and the computer would also be compatible with the software. The tech support department would also be able to troubleshoot the computers since there would be only two choices given to the students.
