Mailing clinical samples within same geographic area

i really think I am at the most ass backwards hospital lab on the planet. I’ve been at this one 7 years and seen some odd things.

The current idea floating around admin is to have the docs mail us their clinical samples rather than have a courier pick it up. The range of these clinics geographically varies from 5 to 30 Miles.

I think a majority of the docs will hate it or bounce somewhere else. I can see the staff having a cow over the packaging of a whole days clinic volume for shipment rather than tossing in a courier bin. I can’t seem to even fathom the rejected specimen issue from this.

Anyone else do this at their establishment? I swear junior admins are trying to sink the place.

totally bass ackwards. We have a part time courier that travels within about an hour of the home facility. Many of the places he picks up are within 2 miles of the facility, one within walking distance. It wasn't an easy sell with the purchase of a car and part time courier. We spun it as a part-time position with the other half time the the courier does phlebotomy. Kind a win-win when they looked at it that way. We were getting about 30-40% of our entire path volume from the courier (plus he picks up a few CP samples on the way), until the rogue GI doc decided to send to corporate america. Now it's more like 15-20%, but looks like it will pick back up in the upcoming months.

The problem seems to me to more and more hospitals would like to shed themselves of the laboratory, especially AP. With PAMA coming, I don't see how many are going to survive. At our meetings they pretty much told us there were going to be significant layoffs of staff.
