Main component of gastric juice

Hi!

In one of the Campbell's quizzes it says that water is the main component of gastric juice. I was thinking that HCl would be the main component. So my question is what exactly is in gastric juice? I was thinking that the food + water + gastric juice = chyme and the gastric juice consists of enzymes and HCL. What is the function of the water in gastric juice?

Water is the solvent and somewhat a lubricant. Pure HCl would wreak havoc on your stomach lining and could cause an ulcer or a perforation. It does not take a significant amount of HCl to drastically lower the pH of a aqueous solution, because HCl is a strong acid.
