There are 3 main different Advanced Dentistry programs out there ( not talking about specalities OMS, ENdo etc... )

I have outlined some of the major differences:

#1) Hospital based GPR: At GPR Programs you will probably work with several specialists. You should gain a lot of experience with Oral Surgery inclucing IV sedation, ext impacted molars, complex Endo & possibly placing implants and advanced procedures such as sinus lifts. You will get OR experience. The downside is you will be worked hard. probably long hours and a tough call schedule. Many clinics have grants which committ the clinic and GPR resident to see many Medical compromised patients. You might get a lot of experience with HIV/ Hep C patients. The positive is experience working with specialists, therefore great experience.

#2) University based AEGDs: With University affiliation you will also be interacting with Specialists. Probably no call schedule, more esthetics. Because of the connection to Dental School you will have a large patient population with advanced cases. ( many difficult procedures are referred up to AEGD from 3rd/ 4th year students) It will be like a 5th year of Dental school where you are dealing mainly with Advanced cases.

#3) Community based AEGD's
Here you will be working in a community clinic probably in a health professional shortage area. You will probably not have many specialists on your faculty. You patients will mainly be Medicaid patients: meaning many can't afford implants, crowns, or endo. You will be spending a majority of your time doing extractions and amalgams.
