I think they only have 3 res/year... way too small IMHO. What happens when somebody gets sick/preg, etc?

thanks for the info...i am sort of interested in a smaller program. but you make a good point--seeing as i am thinking of getting pregnant while in residency...i am nuts i know🙂

I've heard that Maine has a great ObGyn program, albeit small. Don't write it off just because it did not fill this year. One of the big contributing factors to this is the program doesn't have an affiliated medical school feeding into it.

Maine Medical Center has somewhat of an affliation with the University of Vermont, as approximately 1/3 of the third year class, at any one point during the year, does their clinical rotations at that hospital. I actually did my Ob-Gyn rotation there and had a really great experience! The residents are friendly and warm and work together well. The faculty really enjoy teaching! And in terms of the small residency size-- when I was interviewing, many of the residents just had children... Of course it is a balance and everyone has to help out in terms of carrying the load, however, no one was complaining-- the residents seem to be very supportive of each other. I did a med student rotation there and interviewed there. I ended up going somewhere else, but they were my second choice program. Maine summers are short and nice, the winters are somewhat wicked, but the people and the program are tops. I don't think you'd go wrong going there. The head is a gyn-onc, an area of special interest to me and the other areas of MMC have an affiliation with Dana Farber for clinical trials. I think I would have been very happy there. 'Course I grew up there, went to high school there and might have ended up being a lobsterman except for a teacher who convinced me to go off to college and make a mess of my life.... 🙂
Thanks so much for all the info on this program. I think it is going to be my top choice. I am originally from boston (and so is my husband) but we would like to end up in New England. Right now I am out in chicago for med school. I am at a DO school but I see that they have taken DOs in every class (all from UNECOM-the DO school in Maine). Can you give me some advice about how to express to them that it is my first choice blah blah? 3dtp you have already matched and so I just wanted to know how to go about all of this. I am going to do a month there in the fall.

I think that you doing a month there will be the most important thing you can do to match there. I am a DO that applied there for this past year's match and was rejected for an interview. I am in the top 20% of my class, above avg COMLEX scores(no USMLE), one first author pub, and another in process. So, it wasn't like I was barely scraping by. A good friend of mine goes to UNECOM and told me, after the fact, that if you are a DO student and do not rotate through there, you pretty much have no chance of getting an interview much less matching there. Granted with that said, one of her classmates match at Maine for Ob/Gyn this year. But she did a few rotation s out there. So, my advice would be kick butt on your rotation out there and good luck!
