Someone brought this up in a previous thread of mine and figured I might as well open this up to everyone else . How do you as practicing physicians maintain your interest in the subject matter of your practice after years and years of practice . I've been in between neurology and psych for quite some time now and this is something I haven't really taken into consideration. I've always imagined psych as a never ending stream of unique experiences since every pathology is infused into our patients system of beliefs, especially with psychosis patients . But it's probably naive to believe that it never becomes routine .

It's easy to get bored in psychiatry if you top out at mastering psychopharmacology. Therapy is a much bigger beast to master. So in short, get a taller mountain.

In addition, get some outside interests that might be enriched by your psych work, or are a good contrast.

It's a harder profession to go on auto-pilot which has its advantages and disadvantages depending on your personality type. Every patient interaction may fall into a familiar pattern of human behavior, but every individual's experience is unique and complex. The latter aspects are the most important to focus on, though not the easiest. There are plenty of problems to solve in Psychiatry that can be pursued if you have the passion and perseverance. With all the opportunities Psychiatry has to offer, I think your question will have more to do with your internal motivators than the profession itself.

Same as anyone--by thinking about all the nice vacations I'm paying for with the money I get for showing up at work and looking interested...

But I guess by that logic I should just sell out and go into neurology and INR lol . But then would have no life to enjoy those vacation :/
