hey guys i'm a senior and I'm thinking about my college major. for sure I'm choosing biology as my major, but I'm still borderline about whether to get a minor or not. if i do it would be chemistry. so what's your take on minors, are they worth the extra classes and time? do most pre-dental students have a minor? just need some general info on this, thank you.🙂

Minors don't appear on the AADSAS application

The only point in having a minor would be to have diversity. (chemistry isn't that diverse from a biology major) The above post is correct that there isn't a spot for minors on the app, but it would be helpful to minor in art or a field focusing on dexterity since that is what dental schools like. It would give you something to talk about in the dexterity section of the app.

If you choose chemistry as a minor you better make sure you do well in those classes, since that will be added into your BCP gpa. I did not realize until very recently that getting my minor in math would actually affect my GPA calculated by AADSAS. And to be honest, it doesn't feel like I accomplished much. I've put myself through hell with some challenging math classes, but I'm hoping they'll see I can do linear algebra and differential equations and be somewhat impressed.

If P-chem is required,, I wouldn't 🙂

Most bio majors that are pre-health at my school end up getting a minor in chemistry by accident just by taking the required number of classes to fulfill pre-health requirements:

Gen chem 1
Gen chem 2
Orgo 1
Orgo 2
Biochem

A minor in chemistry isn't impressive at all for a biology major. Most of us (biology majors) either incidentally received them through our normal major studies, or are one or two classes shy.

Minors have no significant value.

Consider taking a few business classes instead of the chemistry ones.
