I have heard that MD/PhD programs don't care about one's major, as long as it is in the sciences. Not sure if that is 100% true. Regardless, I am a bio major and have an option of specializing in certain areas, such as physiology, molecular bio, genetics, gen bio, etc. Is it beneficial to do so, or it does not matter. In some cases it is harder to specialize because of the specific courses that one needs to take. For instance, if one does gen bio, he or she can take varied courses from each dept that are interesting to that student. But is just doing gen bio too common and looked upon as a lack of focus, even if the student says that he wanted to explore other areas of bio to see reassure himself that this is the field in which he or she wants to do their PhD or possibly even discover what medical field they may want to get into. Also if one does do a concentration, does it matter if their research does not directly coincide with his specialization (such as if one does BME research but majors in say physiology or mol. bio)? Thanks so much.

I would say it probably doesn't really matter, so it might be best to stay outside specialization and take courses that interest you (and that you will do well in.)

As an aside, you do *not* have to be a science major to do well in MD/PhD admissions. I was a psychology major, and I have met people on the interview trail with lots of interesting sets of coursework. Sure, the research experience lends itself to a major in the sciences, but you don't have to do a full major if it's not your cup of tea.

also, taking diverse classes can help you figure out what your research interests are. I'm a biochem major, but I've taken some great evolution classes that have completely changed my perspective and long term research interests.

I've taken some marine science classes that promoted me to drop my marine science minor.
